For a gen Trek (Voyager, LowerDecks, post-Endgame project) story I wrote once, I got one of my favourite ever pieces of feedback, along the lines of: "Loved the slashiness between characters X and Y".

My reaction was "slashiness? *rereads* Oh, right, slashiness! Cool!"

So in that instance the subtext was completely subconcious - but appreciated by at least one reader...
