Yes, and yes, and yes again. John did the best he could, under the circumstances: the fact that the boys he raised turned out to be sane, relatively healthy, altruistic to a fault, and possessed of both the ability to love and good senses of humor is all the proof we need that he was, in fact, a good father. Regardless of what he says and doesn't say: his actions speak volumes.
I just read these two stories, btw: for some reason I hadn't come across them before. And they're marvelous and heartbreaking in turns. Thank you for writing them, and for the commentary.
