I love seeing them in situations where civilization is no longer (or never was) a restraint upon their actions and feelings. They're so tightly-wound and uncommunicative in canon -- it's nice to really lay them bare and revel with them in pure emotion and instinct, seeing the benefits and realistic consequences of that without any moral judgment being made. (While still keeping what I perceive to be their essential masculinity -- which is probably more a question of civilization vs. wild than any male/female dichotomy. Maybe. Anyway, having them break down and profess their utter love for each other with flowers and a box of chocolates in a motel room is not as exciting to me as them protecting each other in a fight, then one pinning the other in the dirt and sniffing and licking and fucking him like a wild animal.) :D
Sam and Dean in canon (so far) have essentially mated for life, out of both necessity and a deep love and loyalty to each other. I love seeing that expressed in very literal terms. That you can strip them of everything, even to some extent, the civilized personality that makes them who they are (and the personalities that we love so much) -- and they still retain that bond (although it may be more or less than love) -- it's an affirmation for those of us who cherish that most in the source. You're saying, Hey... this isn't a show about monsters and ghosts and guns, as fun as all that stuff is. It's about love. That when it all breaks down, it's still a story about two men who have an uncommon and lifelong partnership, with or without sex.
I never get tired of that.
And, okay, yeah. I keep hoping for some dirty, primal sex.
Sorry for the run-on and incoherent sentences. I get excited. :)
