Having a dig around online, it seems to me that lowercase is standard for XHTML but HTML can be either? I couldn't find a readily available answer by searching the W3C, but you probably could if you dug around for longer than I just did.

Looking back, I'm pretty sure I recall learning to code HTML in uppercase about 10 years ago myself.
