Wonder if you might put in a bit about nesting tags properly? if indeed that's important in HTML? (As I recall XML is very strict about that.)
ETA: Oh and also, thanks for doing this! I rarely use anything but italics and bold, but I'll switch to the screenreader-friendly code.
