I've just been looking into the strike tag in terms of accessibility, actually. It appears to have been taken out of the running for valid (X)HTML. Which means that it's not something screenreaders render at all, either as 's' or 'strike'. Which means it's purely a visual effect, and that's why they're recommending using CSS for it instead.
