TORCHWOOD BIG BANG RECS PART THE FIRST

Yes, the subject requires allcaps. I have been in a constant state of allcaps since the BB went live.

Warning: stories may contain traces of other bits of the Whoniverse!

The Thing with Feathers That Perches in the Soul by [livejournal.com profile] blue_fjords
(PG-13, gen with canon pairings, teamfic)
An absolutely brilliant yarn in an episodic style, though of course with a bit more license than provided by a Beeb budget (and also, better writing. Ahem). [livejournal.com profile] blue_fjords keeps up a brilliant hijinksy pace while managing to zoom right into beautiful character moments that seem to occur almost incidentally, but serve to enrich the whole world she's writing. This story gave me ginormous amounts of love for the characters, and impressed me mightily in the originality stakes. A brilliantly crafted story, tonnes of fun.

And Indeed There Will Be Time by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls
(R [though not for explicit sex], post-Exit Wounds team + Jack/Ianto)
I love time-travelling stories. And mysteries! Another awesome bit of storytelling. [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls picks up on very minor canon characters and invents a few of her own, then gives them depth and respect worthy of a well-crafted novel (which, really, is what this is!). Oh, and she totally does that for the characters we know already, too. A brilliant plot, some very deft tugging at the heartstrings and some expertly understated relationshippiness that seriously had me more worked up than a considerable amount of the explicit porn I've read. Very satisfying!

Guard Them, and Him Within by [livejournal.com profile] etharei
(NC-17, Jack/Ianto)
I just finished this one in a three-hour marathon so I'm still sort of coasting on the afterglow of it. Did I mention that I love time-travelling stories? This one takes the cake. Diverging dramatically out of Beeb-budget zone, [livejournal.com profile] etharei deposits Ianto in a time and place wildly different but for a single familiar face, and forces him to adjust. Full of mystery that you're not really aware of until the author adeptly twists it around to surprise you with it. The kind of pacing and compelling plot that meant I was in the couldn't-put-it-down zone for the whole time of reading, and very satisfying chest-tugging relationshippiness. Epic and extremely enjoyable.

And now I step away from the rest of the tabs I have open. Must pace myself... Save some for later... nngh...

Seconding that by a million

IT WAS YOUR TWITTER THAT GOT ME THERE. I COULD NOT STOP READING. LIKE POTATO CHIPS.

This is the kind of fic that makes me want to stop writing. I can't do anything remotely this complex and good.

Technically smirnoff first mentioned it but it was so so so good. And tight, so tight and it hit hard, man. Definite keeper for me that one

[identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com 2009-06-25 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh shit you're right. It was Smirnoff. ALL YOU TWITTER PEOPLE CONFUSE ME.

HAHAAAHAHAH READ MOAR.

But smirnoff was the beta, so you know, my opinion is a real opinion :P

I use my actual username on twitter. Unlike some.

I'm totally tempting you to that. It's amazing.

THEY WOULDN'T LET ME HAVE MY USERNAME.

Yeah. I always feel like, and no offense to anyone who has ever betaed for me, but when betas rec my fic (even though it is THE LAW), it's a bit like your parents saying that something you've done is good to someone else. It's like, you're my mom/dad. You're obligated

I know. My betas and my girlfriend and people who like my stuff anyway. It's not that I don't trust them to be honest, but I don't trust them to be really honest, yknow.

I responded to you, something really funny, and then I forgot to hit send, and then I thought I'd sent it, and so I closed it, only to find that I hadn't.

So you got this instead. Think of it as a meta commentary on the transient nature of the internets or some shit.

I skim read through the last one at work and although I thought the Chess allegory was a little obvious and her influences clear I thought it was a wonderful bit of world building and the OCs were brilliant.

I'll have to check out your other recs. I started reading the Ianto as a girl one but the Gwen bashing was insanely strong and so I backbuttoned pretty quickly.

Valderys story is also worth a read. Personally the resolution of the Jack/Ianto story wasn't my cup of tea at all - got enough miserable angst in real life, don't need it in my fic, but the Jack/John stuff is fabulously well written.

Thank you SO MUCH for the rec, Hope! *glomps*

There is so much fic on that site. I cannot keep up with it! I have about five tabs of Big Bang open already...
