okay. so. from the results of the poll i deduced that:
  • the $20/$40 is a good starting point for design, but some sites are going to take a lot more effort and some a lot less; and some people aren't even going to be able to afford that much. therefore that should be a starting point/suggested price, i can discuss it further with interested individuals

  • quite a few people thought that $2.50 was too much for icons, others thought it reasonable. i'll put in place something like, $1.50 each or 4 for $5.

  • most people agreed that $15 per hour was reasonable for tutorials/one-on-one teaching sessions, with a few saying that i should charge more and a few that thought i should charge less.

  • people strongly suggested that i shouldn't include fanfic in the paid-services offered, and i think i agree. it's risky to mix them. more people thought an on-story basis would be better to work on than an hourly basis, and a considerable few thought it was too much to charge. a lot of work goes into workshopping, so i think i'd use the $15 as a basic price, and have variations for the length of the story.

  • most people thought it was quite reasonable to set prices, but were concerned that some wouldn't be able to afford it.

a few people said that they didn't think i should offer beta or icon services, because you could get it elsewhere for free, but um, i like to think that i'm offering a fairly high quality of work in those areas, therefore i think it's reasonable to add it to the list of services offered. same with the tutoring. they really do take up a lot of time, and it really is really valuable knowledge.

basically, i'm not doing this because i want to set up a business. i desperately need to save, my current income doesn't allow me to do much of that, and i don't feel right taking donations without anything in return. therefore i'm offering my skills in exchange for donations. i don't have a lot of spare time as it is, so although i know people can't afford to spend $20 for a website, i can't afford to use up a lot of my time for a lot less than that, you know?

so yes. um. i started this post a couple of hours ago and i think i lost my point along the way somewhere. i'll set up a page with stuff on it or something. yep.

hi there dear. as long as you're on the subject...

when i tried to save the images you made for me, it wouldn't let me save them as anything but a bitmap. i cleared my temp files and all that, but it just seems to be files on your server that are behaving that way. could you email the images to me sometime? it isnt urgent, because i can save them as bitmaps and work around them for the time being, but i'd like to have them in their original format before i go to put everything up. just email them to thewayout@livejournal.com, please and thanks again. :)

*rolls eyes* yes of course everyone would rather get it for free! Doesn't mean you have to GIVE it for free!

And... there are places to get these services for free? Well... erm.... some folks don't charge for fucking, but courtesans still do a thriving business (erm, not to imply that you are... oh fuck well anyway you know what I mean)

It's really hard to ask for money, even for services that are well worth it. I know, I have that problem all the time in my work. Smile, say 'this is the price' and put a period at the end of that sentence.

Which is kind of at odds with my earlier comment that having a 'suggested price' might impel some people to pay MORE... Do what makes YOU most comfortable, Hope!tot. You'll go nuts trying to figure out what everyone else wants. You've got some good information from your poll -- use that information to set rules that make YOU feel alright... people who don't like the rules will go elsewhere, and that's OK.
