hope | (no subject)

okay, so, though i'm keeping track though my movies (whee!), i feel the urge to list here the movies i've seen over the past 2 days:

superstar: the karen carpenter story (dir.todd haynes, 1987)
amazing. student film made by the guy who went on to do velvet goldmine et al, superstar is a pseudo-documentary of karen carpenter's life done with barbie dolls. banned from being released due to several legal difficulties. a brilliant film.

tears of the black tiger (dir Wisit Sasanatieng, 2000)
this? is a thailand western. fecking brilliant, mate; the pastiche of the ultimate american western but set in the beautiful thailand country side, blended with thailand culture. amazing cinematography, a lot of fun and quite moving too. SEE IT.

the shining (dir. stanley kubrick, 1980)
so THAT'S where all those references in pop culture come from! eheheh. kubrick is kinda cool. he kinda has some themes he likes to bludgeon to death. yeah.

lolita (kubrik, 1962)
once again with the bludgeoning. yep.

troy (wolfgang peterson, 2004)
was FUN. a bit difficult getting into it early on, the filmmaking was not conducive to getting in there and relating to the characters. and i don't think that was deliberate, in this case. some good performances, though ~~la la la i am NOT going to write achilles/patroclus even though THEIR LOVE IS ACTUALLY SO FUCKING CANON~~.

hulk (ang lee, 2003)
~~hector SMASH!~~ had heard such bad reviews about this, but it wasn't half bad. granted, not as good as crouching tiger hidden dragon, but it's fucking HARD to be that good. anyway. i loved the cinematography in this, with the comic book medium. awesome.

in other news, saw the trailers for spider-man 2 and prisoner of azkaban eeeii SO EXCITING. omg! omg! i can't wait for either of them. especially spider man. I LOVE SPIDER MAN. I LOVE SAM RAIMI. asbndasDJKLFDCH

also went to borders and had a look at sin city (speaking of directors i love), but was strong and made myself save my borders voucher for when rotk extended comes out. so i read the day i swapped my dad for a goldfish instead. eeeii dave mckean/neil gaiman is my otp.

picked up some other dvds from out spectacularly craptacular video shop: the virgin suicides (wheee! 70s!zeke ahaha), chopper (HECTOR SMASH!), galaxy quest (Never Underestimate Fans), spy kids 2 (my husband omg!), gi jane (~~gettin jiggy wid~~ viggy).

wheee movies! they're so much easier to watch while i'm knitting. i have difficulty submitting myself to one passive medium. MUST MULTITASK, DAMMIT. ah, internet. how you have ruined me.

omfg i am also so excited about Spiderman 2! SAM I LOVE YOU! I am also more excited than I should be about the prospect of seeing Bruce Campbell's cameo in this one as 'Snooty Usher'. WHEE. Lalala.

Also: Chopper = fuckin' tops.

I agree that Troy was fun. Really the most surprising thing to me was Eric Bana's performance. He was so much less stiff than usual! Um..stiff acting that is.

Hulk was indeed pretty in terms of presentation but it really was bad in terms of story I thought. In particular what I hated was that the Hulk was hardly in it. Bruce Banner gets boring and I hate to admit it but staring at Jennifer Connelly even gets old after a bit.

Oh, speaking of Jennifer Connelly, Master and Commander would have been so much better if Russell Crowe would have started having delusions and Jennifer Connelly would have been strapped to the mast while Captian Jack bore down on them in the Black Pearl.

And definitely cannot wait for Spiderman. Looks like it will be fabulous. Maybe you can convince girloftheq that it would be worth seeing. I'm not even sure she's seen the first one yet.

My friend once promised me that the Hulk was a realistic portrayal of the early comic and the cinematography was beautiful. I finally realized what Hulk meant for myself. The seeing of Eric's ass and the almost seeing of his man bits. was saddened when they actually shrunk the shorts with him while Betty was calming him down. that didn't really make much sense, but who am I to argue? Of course, besides the constant flashing of the color green and the feeling the film will never end and we'll all be doomed in watching Eric's weirdly shaped face and questionable acting capabilities - it wasn't that bad of a film. I do have to give credit where credit's due - the scenes where the Hulk is chased through the rocks is a very neat sequence.

I feel less guilty if I'm able to do HALF of an assignment whilst watching Angel, cause that way I don't feel like I'm COMPLETELY throwing year twelve down the toilet. Only...bathing it.
