Fandom Wikis

So, I was thinking about all this wikis-for-fandoms (and texts/shows) stuff.

And you know what? I own www.fandomwiki.com, which will in time house a kind of aca-fen fandom-pedia (hopefully).

I was thinking I could offer subdomains there for other fandoms that want to create wikis for their shows (and/or fandoms).

So for example,
http://supernatural.fandomwiki.com
http://dexter.fandomwiki.com
http://smallville.fandomwiki.com

etc.

I know that there are already fandom wikis out there (for eg. http://heroeswiki.com), but yaknow, surely not all of fandoms are accounted for, and surely there are folks around interested in managing/administrating such a thing, if they had the space and configuration/installation taken care of for them.

So, questions:

- would people be interested?

- if so, how to 'advertise' this availability? I'm not the best at disseminating information to such a wide 'audience'.

I think it's very cool, and I'll happily pimp it out in slashfairy and also in my (small and poorly-read) word press blog, if you like. You're so enterprising. -applause-

Would you be able to track down fandom newsletters to pimp it in?

[identity profile] stimpson.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
It is only within the LJ-o-sphere, but it seems that it's a good way to get stuff out there in fandoms.

I am all for creating wiki homes for fandoms in general - they mesh so very nicely with the way decentralized fandom communities run themselves. Which isn't very helpful to your question, I suppose; if I were active in any other fandom right now I'd definitely sign up for modding one.

Ooh.

As for advertising . . . comment to [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, maybe? And pimp it out to your flist to be spread by word of mouth, or, well, keyboard (both on lj and at cons, I suppose). Other than that I'm not sure, really.

Hm. I will get back to you on that - I still have to watch the first ep of the new season, which just came out yesterday, and if I get all jazzed I may take you up. :)

Okay. I'm filled with squee for ROME and will dive into the fandom headfirst. Email me with details for setting this up, eh?

...a theprofessionals.fandom.wiki sounds excellent...(and I still have to get back to you for my own thing, did you get my email about it?)...is it a lot of work?would it be okay if I found a (well trusted) volunteer to work on it instead of me?

as to advertise it...metafandom, fandom newsletters (damn, I ran into a list of newsletters for all fandoms just recently and I can't find it anymore :(
Word of mouth works too I suppose. On LJ, it spreads quite fast and easily.

sorry for taking ages in answering to this!

I'm checking with a couple of trusted Pros friends, if they are willing to work on it with me (hopefully do the most of the work, ah! ;), so I need to get back to you on it still, but thanks, and thanks for offering this in the first place :D

Argh,
I was downloading a vid sometime in the last week, and the vidder was discussing making a vidding wiki, but they weren't sure how to set one up, and I was going to comment and go, ask Hope!
But I forgot, but then theres this, which is even more appropriate, but if you were to mention this on metafandom or something, I'm sure you'd get people all over jumping up and down on this.

I think the only problem would be restricting it to fandoms where people would actually flesh out the wiki. You could set a guideline, like say - there has to be 3-5 volunteers for a fandom, before you'll set the wiki up. Or, have them provide at least 5 seed pages.
Something like that?

Ahahaha.

I've been looking through the Heroes wiki, and hey! How about we just steal this page:
http://heroeswiki.com/Themes

...

After the gender discussion on Mary's journal though, it's also interesting to see where characters are categorised under the Characters (http://heroeswiki.com/Characters) and Cast (http://heroeswiki.com/Portal:Cast) pages.
:P

The proportions for the Main Characters (http://heroeswiki.com/Portal:Main_Characters) are a little depressing, even with listing Simone (http://heroeswiki.com/Simone_Deveaux) there, but not Ando (http://heroeswiki.com/Ando_Masahashi).

*shrugs*

Meh.

"Main Character" status is determined by the people in charge of the show. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how much screentime they get. I, too, would consider Ando to be more of a main character than Simone is, that's for certain. But until the people in charge of the show change their mind this is just how it is. The wiki is just being accurate. :)

What Hope said.
;)

The wiki is pretty cool.
