Everyone in the office just gathered around their computers for an hour or so to watch the live streaming of this (gosh, I love the internet).
I'll admit, I nearly teared up in bits (and no, not just in the misuse of the term "literally" bits). It's still so literally totally new to me to, you know, feel good about the Australian government. I can't actually remember a time where John Howard was not Prime Minister. Or, well, a time where I actually had a concept of what government was (and meant) when JH wasn't there.
I am not saying that omg everything is all betterz now and new govt is PERFECT, EVERYTHING I COULD HAVE EVER WANTED, THANX, but like - they're doing things I agree with, that don't give me a brain-explosion of RAARGH!
I feel so grateful to be a part of this - such a huge moment in the history of this country, such a giant step forward.

I remember the evening we discovered that Bill Clinton was actually winning. We had an impromptu party full of OMG, NOT REPUBLICAN squeeing, because Regan and Bush I made us crazy.
And yeah, Clinton was a moderate, but NOT REPUBLICAN so ever so much better than the alternative. It was nice not having to feel horribly ashamed of our government for a while.

i KNOW. it is really, really BIZARRE. someone likened my O__o at this very fact to being in an abusive relationship when the abuser suddenly does something nice: you don't know what to think.
