wtf, lj?

I have been getting a lot of spam comments on my (public) sticky post lately. Like, a couple per day.

They are just generic things like "Wow!" and "That sucks!" and stupid shit like that, then you click onto the poster's journal and it's just a series of spam entries - links to random spam bullshit, like any spam email.

When deleting the comments, LJ lets you mark them as spam. Which I did when I got rid of a bunch yesterday.

Yesterday I also went to the spam journal and clicked "flag content" - a link at the top on that ridiculous info bar. It took me to a page where I could select what kind of content I was flagging - adult, child porn, spam, etc. So I tick "spam" and report all those spammy journals.

Today the link in the info bar is gone. There's a link to "flag journal" on the user info page, which takes me to this information page. The link to the info on spam there just takes you to a page about what to do if there is a spam comment, or a spam post in a community - there is no way to report a spammy journal any more.

I guess it's because of this policy? It's not actually illegal to post spam in fake journals (unless... it's a certain kind of spam? not that LJ is letting me report it if it *isn't* the allowed kind). It's not actually illegal to post random comments that get people to go to your spam journal. But it's illegal to post spam directly to comments.

Or, can I just not report these journals because I reported a batch yesterday already?

Oh, joy.

I got some like that today. Not really negative stuff, a few weird things like "Any news?", "how r you?", "so be it", and three sent you a message on LiveJournal things too.
I'm sure it's to attract people to their spam stuffed journals and whatever spyware infected links they post. ¬¬

I can't report them for spam either.

Huh, I got one last week that said "If you need it." At the time I thought it was an anti-OTW comment because that was my last public post. Apparently, I am so dense I don't even recognise advertising when I see it.

I've been getting those too - I marked the comment as "spam."

It's annoying not to be able to mark the journal spam anymore.

i think the system stops you from flagging journals as spam if you did a bunch yesterday, because it's a way to minimize the possibility of some campaign of undue flagging (like, i dunno, antisemits going around massively flagging the journals of Jews as spam).

re the spam comments popping up now, i wonder if it has to do with increasing their ration of comments posted/received to become eligible for votes in the lj board stuff?

*points up* That. I remember from when they introduced the flagging thing, that you can only flag a certain amount at a time.

twice in the last 2 days i've had spam comments and spam personal messages, too. i marked as spam, but i didn't think to flag the journals.

I did the same thing. Wish I would've thought to go to the source and mark it as spam as well.

I've been marking them as spam too, and wonder if it's related to the LJ voting system in some way.

[identity profile] naewinter.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that, or that they are going through someone's friends-of list.

Let's just all mark them as spam and maybe LJ will make them Go Away.

[identity profile] astrothsknot.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
LJ wasn't even letting me delete the bloody comments earlier.

[identity profile] laurenmitchell.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've only had one so far. Colour me unimpressed.

Come to me ...

:)

I got a couple myself, both saying "That's good to know".
