Die Hard 4.0 (aka Live Free or Die Hard) master post (of sorts)

Okay! Here's where my Die Hard 4.0 (also known as Live Free or Die Hard, DH4, LFoDH, etc) fannish master list will be.

This isn't a master list in the sense that it's exhaustive of the whole DH4 fandom, but it will include the bits about it I particularly like, including a fanfiction recs list and links to other related media (fannish or not) that I am fond of. Not all of it is DH4-specific, but it is related in some way in that it has given me fannish glee :D

Fanfiction resources

For the record, I tend to be All About The Slash in this fandom (with a John/Matt OTP), but I also have immense fondness for Lucy. So there'll most likely be a slashy slant to the below.

• Master list of Die Hard fanfiction (maintained by viciouscats)
  Hooray for small fandoms! This is pretty much your one-stop shop if you want to go through EVERYTHING (caveat: probably "everything" as in "everything that makes its way onto LJ", which I'm perfectly OK with), though be aware that the most recent stuff may not be there.


• hard4brains - DH4 (namely, Matt/John) slash community on LJ
  My new favourite place. Traffic is low enough that it's perfect to have on your default flist, with new posts around once or twice a week. Average quality of fic is certainly more than bearable :D


• die_hardest - LJ community for DH fanworks
  Higher traffic, and more diversity of mediums posted - eg. more vids, icons, etc. I don't have this one friended, but I do mine it when I'm looking for free icons. Welcomes all kinds of fanfiction and other fanworks.

Fanfiction (John McClane/Matt Farrell) recs

I was planning on putting in some commentary with these recs, because the reasons why I enjoyed them all are varied. But I suck at rec commentary, as it inevitably degenerates to "THIS IS SO COOL! AND PORNY/SCHMOOPY/ANGSTY! READ IT!"

So, in summary: One of the things I love about this fandom is that it's old school in its slash. It's a buddy movie! With a geek and a butch! Etc! So the things I love about these stories (not that all of the following are present in all of the stories) are:
- Beautiful constructions of the old school "slash" aesthetic
- More contemporary re-workings of the slash aesthetic that make somewhat grittier representations of homoerotic dynamics
- Awesome explorations of the world/society (so rarely seen) in the aftermath of the events of an action film
- Awesome explorations of how the heroes of an action movie deal with the aftermath
- Excellent character drawing and voice; made all the more impressive when the canon, while it has some most awesome character pieces in it, is not heavy on character itself
- Awesome porniness/fluff/angst/epicness/humour/etc :)

For the record, I have read and re-read so many fics on that masterlist that I'm having difficulty keeping track of the names of the ones I loved. I have delicioused some, which I'll list here, but will no doubt be adding more. (Also, I'm a bad feedbacker. I hereby swear to make an effort to go through this list and make sure I've commented on every one!)

Specifically Die Hard related

• Die Hard 4 Gag Reel
  Absolutely wonderful and hilarious. If for nothing else but the spontaneous Brokeback Mountain dialogue, wheely chair races and breaking into original song.


• Die Hard by Guyz Nite
  A filk with accompanying songvid (for all 4 films) by a parody band called Guyz Nite. Apparently this was originally a rogue fanwork, but apparently 20thC Fox, after C&Ding them, recruited them for viral marketing. This video, with accompanying doco, is an extra on the DVD.


• Bruce Willis & Justin Long - Uncensored
  Wow, this is... interesting. Aside from the whole, um, somewhat offensive concept that "uncensored!" = "the literal framing device is boobs / there're constant distasteful sex/gender/sexuality jokes"... There is pretty much constant Justin Long straight-facedly talking about Die Hard as if it's a giant porny love story between John & Matt. So, take what you can get, I guess.

Not specifically Die Hard related, but...

• Mac vs. PC "Get a Mac" ads (starring Justin Long as Mac)
  Totally adorable (and infamous) advertising campaign by Apple, wherein Justin Long is the personification of a Mac & Some Other Guy is a PC. Yep, the casting agents for DH4 weren't that imaginative. Amusingly enough, I only seem to be able to get the above link to work when I'm on my Mac; browse YouTube if you're a PC user and having some problems. This one is a good place to start, or there's a playlist for the whole series here.


• Robin's Big Date starring Justin Long as Robin (and Sam Rockwell as Batman).
  A totally adorable amateur spoof video. Wherein Justin Long has little green spanky pants, and subsequently I have elaborate day dreams about John & Matt dressing up as Batman & Robin.

Picspams & other images

• Brains with Urgent Appointments - Penny Arcade strip
  This pretty much accurately sums up the portrayal of technology in the film. Dear god, I love that strip. And the movie. Because the strip is totally accurate. \m/


• Justin Long & Bruce Willis (& Maggie Q) on some red carpets - via lamardeuse. Mmm, shiny.


• Matt/John picspam - lamardeuse
  A slashy recap of the film - with screencaps! Very wonderful :)
