Die Hard 4.0 fic!

Title: Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
Author: Hope / [livejournal.com profile] angstslashhope
Fandom: Die Hard 4.0 / Live Free or Die Hard
Genre: Slash (Matt Farrell/John McClane), domesticity, complete lack of action (er, the helicopter/car kind).
Rating: R
Notes: For the July 4 Ficathon @ [livejournal.com profile] hard4brains, using the "outsider POV" prompt. Giant thanks to [livejournal.com profile] fools_game for the beta and [livejournal.com profile] kphoebe for the glee and consultation. :

The title is from a song called "Flowers on the Wall", which is used in Pulp Fiction. John McClane also quotes that particular line of the song in Die Hard with a Vengeance, which made me flail with glee. It's that line that I've used for the title, though it doesn't really have anything to do with the story. Aside from the fact that the whole thing is one big excuse for me to make jokes about Bruce Willis being in Pulp Fiction.

Matt's shirt is an artifact of geekery.

Jack's frat, KOK, and his associated money troubles are taken directly from one of the most appalling (and yet entertaining) films ever made, Sorority Boys. Because original plots are for losers who have imaginations.

Also, Justin Long with glasses. How could I not?

Hey, it's gorgeous, even if it was TOO SHORT. Er, please write more DH fic is what I meant to say. *koff*

How do you feel about typo pointer-outers? Happy or like they should be lynched?

Oh I liked this- the mood and the language. Your characterizations are so real and right.

And the smut was quite hot. ;)

I felt like it ended really abruptly, but I'm not really sure what else I wanted to see.

Oooh, I love it. Funny and engaging, with interesting details and a really nice description of Matt and John's relationship, but way too short.

The world needs more outside POV fic.

I really enjoyed this. Very cool, nice tone, and everybody's thoughts seem right in keeping with who they are and how they'd feel.

Whoo! I'm so excited about this (still, after reading it twice) that I'm not very coherent in my comment, but whoo! I've never read a story that features Jack this way and I'm so happy that someone finally wrote one~ soso happy. Because this is what could happen and I absolutely love how you pulled it off. Your characterizations and the descriptions - pure love. ♥

*clap clap clap* Alright, first things first: That was lovely. Though it's far too long that I last watched Pulp Fiction, so I didn't get any of those references *hides*.

I really liked your Jack too! I was sadfacing a little bit at stoopid Holly. Hehehehe Kowalski O.o she was cool!

Here are two things that made me gigglesnort: 'I’m on the committee for our annual cocktail party' Sorry, but for some reason I found that hi-la-ri-ous! Also 'That’s not a drug store bag, asshole, it’s clearly a newspaper.' though this second one also made me go 'awwwww'. Love the domestic feel of their relationship. Nicely done. Oh, one more (must take the time for this one, heh) 'though he does take the time to flip Matt the bird.' *smooches McClane*

Last but not (not ever) least: Glasses \o/ *makes high-pitched noises of approval* you gaved Matt glasses. All is well.

Also the smut was hot. Must praise that as well, as to make the author do that again, please :D Also because it is truth.

oh, yay!

discovering this made insomnia much more fun - I really liked having Jack be the outsider PVO (we don't see him enough in stories, imo) and this was a really plausible way for him to meet Matt, and things to happen. his overseeing their embrace accidentally works better than a big awkward coming out scene immediately upon his arrival - which doesn't feel like John's style, really.

love love loved the shout-out to Sorority Boys - one of the best bad movies ever made *g*

Yay! That was awesome. Loved how you drew Jack, he was just perfect. Loved seeing John and Matt through him, and around him, and loved seeing how domesticated they are together. :-)

Well done, great job, yippee ki yay!

Very lovely! All characters are just dead on and realistic and I love the way Jack tries to negotiate his ideas of what it means to be gay with the mundane life he observes. Especially the little details were lovely, Matt stealing from John's food as he warms it, Jack's wet socks...

And I realize I need an icon!!!! :D

Adam, Dave, and Doofer bailed on Jack? Jerks. *is the co-mod for [livejournal.com profile] sorority_boys* Appalling though it is, the movie does have moments of genius.

Love this story, Jack's side of it. Matt and John trying to be so careful around him and failing so hard.

Would love to see more in this world, Jack confronting John.

Nice work!

This story was a lovely read.

[identity profile] irena-adler.livejournal.com 2008-07-06 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Wonderful, domestic, calm yet panicked, real. Hope that made some sense. Loved it, need to see Jack and John's (non)conversation!

[identity profile] special-trille.livejournal.com 2008-07-06 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, that is entirely awesome! Way to nail the outsider POV. And yes, very much yes to the characterisation. \o/

complete lack of action (er, the helicopter/car kind).

No way! It had hacking! That counts.

I really liked this. I've seen a bunch of stories with Lucy's reaction, but none with Jack's, and it was really interesting to get an outsider POV on their relationship.

I'm almost disappointed to discover (after reading) that you acknowledged Sorority Boys. Because I was thinking this was some sort of secret easter egg of depravity aimed specially and privately at ME.

I kept thinking the story would erupt into cross-dressing hijinks at any moment! John, Matt & Jack all put on a skirt and heels - and fight crime! C'mon. Think about it.

BUT ANYWAY.

I read this last night and I'm still now enjoying thinking about the bit where they're bumping shoulders in the kitchen. You evoke the intimacy so strongly without their doing anything sexual. And it's kind of sad as well, with Jack not being very close to John, and being on the outside looking in at someone else being close to him.

AND ADJUSTING HIS TIE. I die of emotionally repressed man affection. I die.

This fic was really enjoyable! I wasn't sure what I'd think of it when I started reading it, but I really liked it. I loved the Sorority Boys reference haha

Oh, awesome story! I really enjoyed reading this, all those little moments of domesticity and awkwardness. Thanks for sharing!

[identity profile] halfshellvenus.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
This was tons of fun, and had the added kink of an outsider figuring out what was going on (that kiss that we didn't quite see was the hottest thing in the story for me).

Not to mention the overall tone, and Jack labelling Matt "the Random Guy" which in so many ways, Matt actually IS. :)

I really liked your story. :)

[identity profile] ceares.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Loved this--the playful domesticity, seen from both sides, Jack's tentative, yet maturing relationship with his dad, all very nicely done.

[identity profile] greenapple.insanejournal.com (from livejournal.com) 2008-07-18 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I really like this -- love the domesticity... but the ending is so abrupt. It very much feels like the first chapter in a longer, plottier story. :)

Still! Very enjoyable.

Thanks for prodding me toward the gate a bit on the Die Hard stuff. I'm really in love with 4.0 -- it doesn't quite match the awesomeness of the original, but WHAT CAN? It's a classic. But Live Free Or Die Hard makes me have this face:

[ I read the post about you being stressed and worrying about fulfilling obligations + the post about recently watching it with someone and inferred that you didn't really want to do it again. Plus there's the time difference. And, in reality, I have too many distractions (most of them are named Alexander) to actually watch something from start to finish without a bunch of pauses and breaks, so... Well. Just wanted to say something about it, in case you thought it was weird or something that I never said anything about it. !?! I don't know. ]
