Idiot Box

This is a sticky post of my TV habits: what I'm watching, what I want to try, what I've tried and rejected. Feel free to recommend me new stuff!!

I've added what I can remember thus far. Will add more as I recall them.

A note on my tastes & preferences: straight-up drama (cop shows, law shows, medical shows) tend to leave me cold. I like scifi and magic realism and quirkiness; if a show has a reasonably generous quota of those then I'll probably give it a go.

What I'm currently watching:
PLEASE DON'T SPOIL ME

  • Heroes

  • Dead Like Me

  • Farscape

Homicide: Life on the Street.

I can see how someone would be less than fully on board with Life on Mars, but the only way to make *any* sense out of it is to see it from the beginning.

Aww man... You saw any episodes that weren't the first episode?
Suck, total spoiler. And you'd have missed all the undercurrents of what was going on.

Yeah-nah, you need to see the first episode - it's the make or break. If that didn't ping you in the slightest (and if there was anything you liked in it, trust me, it continues), then don't bother watching any more.

Sleeper Cell was awesome. American Terror left me cold. I only got halfway through that.

That stoning scene was the most horrible thing I've ever seen

What is the status of these?:

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
Angel
The Avengers * rec
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Due South
Gilmore Girls
Northern Exposure * rec
Red Dwarf * rec
Starsky and Hutch
The Wild Wild West * rec
Friday Night Lights
The X-Files
Dark Angel * rec

Also... "Wolverine/Edward Scissorhands". NGAHAHA. What prompted? Anything other than the obvious funny?

I couldn't get past the first season of Gilmore Girls, myself, but it was worth watching okay.

Starsky and Hutch starts off serious and gets progressively sillier. It's kind of dumb, but I have a place in my heart for it. Same goes for most of those on the list. :)

And I couldn't finish watching Friday Night Lights once they played down the football and amped up the relationship stuff, but I still recognize it's damn good tv.

But... you haven't seen Northern Exposure? For serious?
It's probably in my top five.

So is Edward like, adult Ed, or is he AU teen mutant Ed?

I am so intrigued.

If you like LOM, you may want to catch the 80's set spin off, Ashes to Ashes.

I never miss The Shield. You may also want to catch Blade the Series or Ultraviolet (1997 TV series with Jack Davenport and Phillip Quast) Veronica Mars, the first season was excellent TV.

I guess it all depends on what you like

Life!

Life is not Life on Mars, different series!

I like your listing. I may want to make one myself...

Rome is excellent, btw. Haven't watched it all, but I really like it.
Give precedence to Torchwood (is refreshingly different!)

I'm waiting to find both seasons cheap *G*

ALSO ALSO!

Watch NCIS, and Man From Uncle (a classic!), and HARSH REALM, and you're lacking Westerns up there, where are the Westerns!
Magnificent 7, Young Riders, Lonesome Dove.

NCIS is fun *G*

[identity profile] phantomas.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Young Riders has the interest element of having a girl disguising as a boy in order to be a Pony Express.

Lonesome Dove first series is pretty much straightforward Western of the mild variety, whereas the second season changes drastically (for the better).

Mag7...is a slashfan paradise, seven men, you can pair them up as you like and swap. Ehm.

HARSH REALM is def QUIRKY! Very few eps (9? I think) because Fox axed it (as they do), but a virtual reality world...does that grab you?
(and there's DB Sweeney *fangirls him*)

NCIS is a procedural, basically, but it's fast and silly, and I like the characters' interaction.

MUNCLE is...well, it's pre-Avengers, similar surreal flavour, 60s spies *G*

I adored Young Riders. I didn't twig at all that he was a she till later so all the longing looks were very interesting.

[identity profile] phantomas.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore Young Riders too :D
I think the first series is now available on DVD, btw. Lou could have easily been a way young/bookish boy, so, yes, it was very intriguing :D
(and IKE, oh IKE!)

[identity profile] naewinter.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've seen it around but when I get the funds it'll probably dissapear!
I loved the old dude's reaction to finding out! 'I just thought you two were ... you know.' XD

[identity profile] phantomas.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. When I watched it, it was in Italy so it was dubbed! It's never close enough to the original script. Teaspoon was fun :)
I have to watch my funds as well, but I hope to get it before it disappears :D

And, the Professionals! You have to watch the Pros!

*shuts up and leaves you be*

I don't see OZ in your list!

[identity profile] irradiatedsoup.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
SO MUCH TV PORN.

I saw Summer Glau on the telly this morning being interviewed by Richard Wilkins. It was weird because I expected her to say "I don't know what I'm saying! I never know what I'm saying!" But she didn't. She totally knew what she was saying.

[identity profile] stimpson.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha, Brisco County Jr. Oh Bruce.

Also, not long before I left Aus I rewatched the first few seasons of Northern Exposure and it was just as good as I remembered, it's held up really well! So it's good to see that up there :D

I've currently been a bit swept up by/with Doctor Who and Torchwood. And I have to add my recommendation for Life On Mars, as well. It's a cop show... with... symbolism. And stuff. Think Lewis Carrol and Wizard of Oz meet Starsky & Hutch meet Mulholland Drive. Thing. With butterfly collars and velvet flares. And John Simm is nice. He has beautiful pale shoulders, which are nice. And in general and all ways very nice. He's the reason I started watching the new Who/Torchwood which are actually FANTASTIC in their own right. Torchwood is a bit like Angel, in Cardiff, with aliens instead of demons, and tons more pansexual snogging. And the first season of the new Who has Christopher Eccleston, who is NICE, and also this whole subtextual narrative about the psychosexual maturation of women and their healthy attachment to father figures. Tennant is fun and charming, but not quite so much the drop dead sex, I'm afraid. And. And! Hope, AND! Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who, isn't that clever? And you don't have to watch them both, but there's quite a lot of things in Torchwood that make more sense if you're watching Who as well.

*takes breath*

So.

That's what I've been doing.

I forgot how fun it is to squee!

[identity profile] greenapple.insanejournal.com (from livejournal.com) 2008-04-22 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
and that would be Lewis Carroll, with two ells, not one.

[identity profile] greenapple.insanejournal.com (from livejournal.com) 2008-04-24 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not really a stop by. I still read you & the rest of my flist every day; just don't have anything useful to add is all.

[identity profile] atlantisgrrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That are some long lists you have here. Oh, but BSG and Rome are so, so great! I'm with you there! And I second the rec for Slings & Arrows. *browses more* Has anyone mentioned Psych yet? If you just want to try one episode on for size, watch the first ep of the second season. I got hiccups.

Also oh, lookit: What have we here (http://ciceqi.slashcity.com/Claws.htm)?

*buffs nails*
