Backing up your LJ!

Always good to know:

Windows: LJArchive - for backups that you can browse, search & view statistics on locally, or re-upload to LJ & clones should you need to.

Mac: XJournal - is actually a LJ client (for updating etc) that has a "History" function - you can easily search, browse & edit all your past entries, and importantly: download them for backups. (Just go to the "Window" menu, then "History" then the "Download" button.)

Any OS: LJBook - for backing up your entire journal as one big PDF (obv not as portable should you wish to reinstate your LJ)

Apparently there are other ways too, but they seem to involve programming n stuff, which I am wary of playing with when it comes to backing up important stuff. The above three are the easiest I've come across.

I use the LJArchive thingy very successfully.

Well, fie -- every time one of the "back up your LJ!" frenzies happen, LJBook gets too overloaded to actually use. Time to try XJournal again!

Thank you! I'm trying the XJournal one. I've been thinking of retiring from LJ for a while now, and the only thing that's been holding me back is not wanting to lose all my entries. If I can successfully get the thing backed up, I'll be free to go!

Okay, I downloaded Xjournal and I'm looking at it on my browser and I... can't figure out how to use it! How do I initiate a backup of all my LJ entries since 2003??? Help!

I hope you don't go away. Friendslock everything maybe, but don't go?

XJournal has a History window (Windows menu). Wait until you're not going to use the computer for a while. Log in to your account on xJournal (it's been safe for me so far) go to History, and click the Download button. Leave for a while as it downloads. It has a fairly inflexible listing Year/Month/Day browser, but it's OK and the search wors. Good luck!

I keep getting 'The server requires that you set your encoding setting before your journal can be downloaded', and it says it can be found at the bottom of the 'edit personal info' page. But I can't find it. Can anyone help?
