British book recs?

I want to read up more on the history of human civilisation in the British Isles. Can anyone rec me a good read?

I don't often read nonfiction, so the less dry it is the better. I was flipping through this one in the bookshop, today, anyone read that?

From my learnings, I know that The Dark Is Rising was inspired in part by The Land by Jacquetta Hawkes. Jacquetta was J.B Priestley's wife, to the best of my knowledge, and deeply knowledgeable about early Britain and archaeology. I have not yet read it myself, but it sounds like it might be relevant to your interests.
