HETRO LOVE IS WRONGS
Also, thank you RTD for some more really unsubtle "OMG ANYTHING NOT M/M, EW EW EW" rhetoric. Evil children! Pregnancy freakout followed by some really unsubtle OMG PREGNANCY WILL MAKE YOU EXPLODE AND RUIN EVERYTHING! Jack and Ianto being totally willing to use their family as labrats and that being... somewhat sympathetic/for a laugh? Methinks it'll only get worse and there's totally an undergrad essay in there, by the end of it. *finger twirl*
I seem to be finding myself struggling between the characters I totally love and the amount that RTD irritates me. I totally want to fanwank that appalling "will visit family in order to abduct children for alien testing" into "look at how fucked up Torchwood has made Jack and Ianto, and now they're fucked up together!" But, you know, that's sort of what Rusty wants me to do, I think, and ultimately it totally dehumanises the children in his plot even more (inorite, how is that possible?) by exploiting on both internal and external (to plot) levels, which I am not happy with.
Children = people too! (amazing, i know.)
blah blah blah.

Children are unpredictable because they haven't all bought into the rules of society, which is why I'd far rather face a crowd of football hooligans than a crowd of ten-year-olds.

Also, I get the feeling that RTD (and, by proxy, Jack) kind of worships the idea of motherhood and straightness. He always puts a sainted straight girl at the center of things, and the pregnancy/bomb thing read more to me as "in straight people, it's a miracle - in queer people, it's DEATH." So yeah, there's this weird element of simultaneous worship and disgust, it seems. It's interesting how Gwen and Rhys get the cozy married domesticity whereas Jack and Ianto get sexual passion plus emotional weirdness.
But dude, yeah, WTF - Filipino child HUH? I did a comical blinking double-take at that line.
In some ways, RTD is quite a good writer. In others, he is sort of terrible.

Yes, this and this. My cultural studies brain is a bit too rusty (hah hah, pun unintended) to properly dig into that side-by-side awesometude and fail. To be honest, I think that lack of consistency may have something to do with the multi-author nature of television-- there's Rusty writing and producing, but then there are the actors, and the director, and editor, etc etc, all influencing the characters and story as well. I suspect if it was ALL RTD, there's be more fail.
