All things bright and beautiful

Supernatural, pre-series to season 1; Sam/Dean, PG-13. by [livejournal.com profile] angstslashhope.

eta: This story has been published in the Supernatural Slash Anthology Vol I & II. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] moveablehistory!

"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.

"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

This is... It's kind of sweet and adorable but it's also got this undercurrent of OW that just makes the sweet bits sweeter. It's just wrong for Mr Bun to be in with all the weapons, rather than being cuddled.

Although I'm thrown by the fact that Mr Bun actually has fur because, in my head, he looks like my sister's Woofles. Who I can't remember ever having fur - he's always been a collection of flannel patches.h

it took me quite a while before i got it. *facepalms*

There was a button in the kit, Dad’s voice is gruff.

Couldn’t find it, Dean says. No time.

aawwww. you know how to slay a fangirl. *flails*

very nice, i like the progression. you should let your oxygen-deprived brain take over more often! ;)

[identity profile] derryderrydown.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Yes, Woofles is a proper noun. He was originally vaguely dog-shaped (although my sister spent twenty years thinking he was vaguely donkey-shaped - I don't know how she explained the name Woofles if he was a donkey) but is now just a... shape. Of yellow flannel patches.

The easiest way to wind my sister up into fire-breathing fury is to threaten Woofles.

It's hilarious. *g*

OH MY GOD YOU KILLED ME DEAD AGAIN STOP DOING THAT.

The repetition of You always saw red clearer, with your button-eye. and the way Mister Bun sees all of them, and the way they treat him, and the edges of the growing-up and the OH GOD I AM JUST SO FULL OF LOVE and now I must go hug my threadbare toy rabbit and remember the time my Dad had to go back to the park at night to get her and I was so right, this story needs to take over ALL OF FANDOM WITH ITS MIGHTY WONDERFUL POWERS.

[identity profile] nebulein.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's just my sleep-deprived brain taking a bit longer than normal... Or a combination of both ;)

i feedback very little in the last time, but i figured this one really deserved a comment. :)

OMG! I! This! You! THING! OMG! Velveteen Rabbit! *FLAIL!*

[identity profile] deirdre-c.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This may be the best outsider POV I've ever read. Wonderful!

There are some truly gorgeous lines in here...
It's never really silent, unless Sammy's not with you.
That just says it all, right there. Unbelievable.

...whispering comforts to you while Dean slept silently, an arm’s reach too far away.
So much longing.

He’s always held you with both hands, and gently.
Mr. Bun as proxy. I adore it.

Are you saying I smell like a mangy old rabbit toy?
No, that it smells like you. See? You’re pressed gently to Sammy’s mouth, the familiar easy warm-damp as he breathes in, out.
Smells like Mister Bun.

This just makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time.

But my favorite image is one you repeat ('cause you know it's brilliant, don't you? *g*)
You always saw red clearer, with your button-eye.

This story just makes me happy in about 30 different ways. Thanks so much for sharing.

(BTW: [livejournal.com profile] lea_ndra had a 'Mr. Bunny' in "To Wish Impossible Things'. I'm sure there are others!)

Ok, trying to give coherent feedback.

The Velveteen Rabbit is one of my favorite stories, and you captured the style of it perfectly. The sweetness, the pain, the hope. The Velveteen Rabbit always made me ache and want to hug something, this story has the same effect. Wonderful use of perspective, seeing them all interact through Mr. Bun's eye(s) and with Mr. Bun. John going to out at night to get him! Dean using his button! Sam leaving Mr. Bun in the car! OMG LSDJGFSDGH! *FLAIL!* No good at feedback. Um, I'll go back to lurking....

You get my Declaration of Awesomeness for the day. Okay, the week.

>>He rubs your eartip between thumb and finger and the fabric is little more than bare-net structure, worn by the ever-repeated gesture.>>

I did that as a kid, too. Wore things right down that way.

And John coming back to the woods to find Mister Bun, and talking to him when he picks him up - that sticks with me.

>>You always saw red clearer, with your button-eye.>>

You got so much creepiness and mushiness in that *one line* that all I can do is stare at it in awe.

[identity profile] drvsilla.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmm. This was much more affecting and effective than I'd have expected. Mr Bun is very perceptive, beyond what he simply knows. Oh, stuffing brain, all the things you see.

It really is the perfect path of growing up- Mr Bun unchanging but his world around him (his people, his Sammy) becoming different. I liked the three Winchester's different reactions and handling of him, from Dean's shirtbutton eye to Dad being pleasantly surprised to see him, tucked away in the trunk with the weapons. And now ...Mr Bun might see more than he ever anticipated! ;D

Just, Mmmm, again.

As a note, Calvin and Hobbes cartoon, the good friend Susie had a Mr Bun. Not that I think there's any corollary here, I just thought of it. :)

Oh, this is lovely. Very unusual, too.

[identity profile] lcsbanana.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
oh jeez, this is so gorgeous. not twee or affected in the LEAST, and really only you could pull of a story from the pov of a TOY BUNNY that doesn't even stray towards silliness. it's just purely sweet and true and sad and OH, OH *BUNNY.* *sniffling*

[identity profile] mikhale.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear Hope,

Don't do this again. I don't think I'll survive the next time.

Love,
Mik

PS. In case you do decide to do this again, prepare to bind a Reaper.

Oh, lovely. Very, very good. I love 'The Velvetten Rabbit' and this is a delightful sort of twist on that. I love that they each hold him a different way and Mr. Bun knows them all and that he's hearing Sam's heartbeat 'thrum thrum' when Sam carries him and...

Yeah. Good stuff.
*sniffle*

[identity profile] tsuki-no-bara.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, dude, this is just about perfect. i love the really limited rabbit pov - i mean what he can actually see, the way you describe it when sam's swinging him around and chasing after dean on the bike - and all the things going on right outside his vision, and the little repetitions - you always saw red clearer, with your button-eye and he’s always held you with both hands and the way sam always rubs the tips of his ears between finger and thumb - and that dad comes back in the middle of the night to get mister bun after sam drops him, and that sam leaves him with dean when he goes off to stanford, and that dean keeps him until sam comes back, attached to the underside of the weapons box like a good-luck charm.

(but i think what finally broke me was red-plaid shirt, missing button, followed by there was a button in the kit.... couldn't find it. no time. this is a love story, you know? the love of a boy for his bunny and a bunny for his boy, and brothers for each other.)

[identity profile] tallisen.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This was so adorable! Seeing the world through Mr Bun's eyes is smart and very original! I really enjoyed reading this.

A bunny & angst..what a lovely combination :-) Thanks!

I--- man. I loved this. like, a lot. and man, I could talk about my own stuffed toys, and how I always believed that they came alive at night, and--- yeah.
