This is a relatively happy moment from that time in their lives, and yet it's still so heartbreaking; how could it not be?

That's pretty much what this collection seems to be all about... that it wasn't all bad, John must have been doing something right (considering how well the boys turned out!), clearly they all love each other dearly... but, you know, doomed!
