question: is MasterCard used as much in the States/Canada as Visa?

edit: thanks, all! thank goodness for credit cards, otherwise i believe i'd be screwed for money over there.

I've noticed that Visa has pretty much captured the market share, judging by the credit card numbers I process at work. Mastercard is second, with Discover close behind.

i think visa is a little more common, though not by much. you shouldn't have trouble at all with mastercard. that's what i have.

Mastercard and Visa are two of the most common credit cards so far used in the US--i think as has been said before that Visa is used even more frequently (i use Visa ;)).

Well, I can't think of anyplace offhand that takes Visa but doesn't take Mastercard.

I would suggest at least some funds in traveller's cheques, just in case.

And let your credit card company know you're travelling, so they won't think the card is stolen and decline charges.

I was fine with my visa card. I could draw out dollars and pay for stuff in shops, was no problem at all :)

oh, you want to know for a trip

I thought you might be making a mastercard ad-y'know, ...,...,...: priceless.
Oh, well-have a good trip wherever you're going. and do take a couple traveler's chex-you never know.

Visa is more common, but anyone that takes Visa also takes MasterCard.

I find MasterCard is used a little more, but that might just be my own regional bias. But yes, the only one that ever gave me trouble working at my clothing store was American Express, so you should be good armed with the twin cannons of MC and Visa.

I used to have (20 years ago) a mastercard and a visa. more than a decade ago, one of them did a switcheroo on me, and the visa became a mastercard. So I have two mastercards and no visa.

I have never, ever ever encountered a situation where I could not use my mastercard, and yet a visa would be accepted.

So it doesn't matter.

I'm sure MasterCard is taken all over the world, since everyone knows it just as well as Visa. :)

Side question: Where in Canada are you visiting? East or West??

I don't even own a Visa. MasterCard all the way. But I don't know of ANYWHERE that takes one but not the other.
