why didn't anyone tell me about this movie before? oh. ow. aside from being awesome of the awesomeness in the story/script, it is so beautifully shot and performed. HEART.

also, now i know why jump street chapel has so many posters of james dean, heh.

Oh, yes, it is beautiful...and strange. The dialogue, the way everyone acts, it's like they're not real people. I often think about what James Dean would have been like as an actor if he had lived and made dozens of movies. He's fascinating. Have you seen East of Eden? It was directed by Elia Kazan and I love it more than Rebel, for the story and for Jimmy Dean's performance. If you haven' t, you must see it. It's just...guh.

You probably know about this, but Rebel is surrounded with tragedy. Like how all three stars died in accidental, freakish deaths while still young. And the guy who made it, Ray (something, can't remember). I read an article about him a while back. He was like the James Dean character, never fitting in anywhere. He was a kind of visionary who made few movies for Hollywood but was always on the scene, drifting around. A bit of a con artist too. I seem to recall that he came to a sad end also.

Aside: Have you ever noticed how, in some light, from some angles, Elijah looks like James Dean?

Oh, yeah, it's tragic. Dean died in a car crash, Sal Mineo was shot, and Natalie Wood was drowned. And people talk about the 'Poltergeist' curse. Eesh.
