good news!!1

The first day's box office for SERENITY was $280,763.

This placed it 5th on the national box office chart for the day, behind all of the school holiday features (in order: CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY $378,428, WALLACE AND GROMIT $373,464, SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL $303,328 and SKY HIGH $293,961), but ahead of all other product including new openers CINDERELLA MAN ($275,831) and TRANSPORTER 2 ($185,557).

Important to note is that out of all films in the top 20, SERENITY had the highest per screen average (which, for the uninitiated, means that when you take the box office, and divide it by the number of locations at which it is screening, the film came out at number 1). This is a very good omen for exhibition, because in a lot of locations, SERENITY was the largest film in the cinema complex...and that bodes well for maintaining the number of screens for the film and the size of the cinemas.

Australian figures, taken from here.

HAPPY SERENITY DAY, USA!!
