Recommend me an affordable, user-friendly and proactive virus program?

I've been running AVG, but I'm not sure it's been working properly, because although it daily downloads updates, it comes up with an error message about my authentication key or something and asks me to reinstall. and AVG isn't free anymore, innit? so i never know what to do, and just hope for the best. only today it came up and said i had a bunch of files infected with a worm virus called gaelicum (or something), and it couldn't fix them. i managed to download something that did, but still. I'D LIKE A VIRUS PROGRAM THAT WORKS AND THAT I CAN TRUST TO FIX THE PROBLEM. and i'm willing to pay what I can afford for it.

Help?

eta: I'm on Windows XP, if that affects your suggestions at all.

Ther'es still an AVG free version, I bet, except it's harder to fin on the site? will google for it in a minute. I saw several places recommending this one recently: ClamWin http://www.clamwin.com/ - I am a satisfied AVG user for now, so i haven't tried it.

here's the free AVG page - you could try uninstalling your odd buggy version and install this one again, perhaps, too.

I like Clamwin, which has never given me a lick of trouble.

VET seems ok, it's been on the bookshoppe computer for a couple of years and I have it at home. It's buyable, but has the bonus that if something's amiis you can actually ring them (they have an office in Melbourne) and speak to someone! Novel, but very helpful!

I think that AVG you have on your computer is a paid version so that's why it's asking you to resubcribe. I still have free AVG on my computer and it updates and everything. I'm sure you could reinstall the free version.

We have the free Clamwin at work and it seems fine, though I've never actually tried to remove a virus with it, so...

My techy stepbrother tells me VET is the best of the paid ones, less intrusive to your system performance.

a really good free program is the personal version of adaware at:

www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

it's very good for specific spyware control at the least.

We also use AVG but the daily download thing is a bit much - but we do also use AntiVir Guard at www.free-av.com which also needs updates but when we use them both it keeps us clean.
