I love the way the gay is constructed in Supernatural. Not only through the physical/emotional intimacy, but through things like that scene in ‘Faith’, just after the opening title, Sam in the hospital with the police officers. The nurse asks for proof that he’s Dean’s brother; the police watch anxiously and then relax and everything’s fine when Sam proves it with his (fake) ID. Because the cops aren’t actually worried as to why this guy was electrocuted in a basement of a derelict house, and why there were kiddies there. They’re more concerned about the law being upheld where significant others in gay couples aren’t actually allowed to visit critically ill people - only het partners/close relations.

And yeah, like I said - it’s fake ID that he shows them. He has to pretend to be Dean’s brother so the cops/hospital staff won’t know that they’re partners.

And, like, a million other things that I’m sure I don’t need to list, like when they’re driving away from Cassie in Route 666, and Sam asks, “don’t you ever think, when you come across people that hot cool, that you want to give up this for them?” and Dean just looks at him, not missing a beat, and that look is enough to say “give up you for her? as if.” and of course, he doesn’t bother dignifying it with a verbal answer.

And of course, the whole usual episode structure that’s in that one, and how it places them. And when I say ‘usual episode structure’, I mean the way their victims-of-the-week’s relationships/conflicts reflect whatever conflict is going on in Sam & Dean’s relationship at that point. And we all know it’s all about Sam. So of course, here’s an episode about a young person who is the product of a dangerous event (a fire, even), going on relatively oblivious of the Big Family Secret. And named after a seer, even, you know? Someone who has premonitions, can see the future? So of course, Dean has sex with her (the Other, the minority - black/gay).

And of course, how can I forget The Benders? Gosh, but I am fond of that episode. From a bunch of little things, like the first time we see the picture of the cop and her brother and assume they’re couple instead of siblings... To the things like Dean coming into the barn trying to be all nonchalant and failing, and the grin on Sam’s face (that’s because they love eachother, not just because Sam’s no longer going to be hunted and killed), and the way Sam’s been clued in by the cop saying “your cousin’s looking for you” so that he can’t call Dean ‘Dean’, so that they have to be dancing around the subject of their relationship and speak in innuendo instead of openly, because they have to hide it from her.

And yes, as Mary commented today - once again the reflection of their relationship in the freaks-of-the-week; not only the killing-and-hunting thing, but the whole “marrying your sister” thing. har.

OH. LOVE.
