cuckoos

As I have discussed before, I have Supernatural theories on the Sam-Max-Meg dynamic. Or rather, arc.

In part of the whole big conspiracy-theory arc, it's pretty damn obvious that Sam and Meg and Max are connected somehow. Regardless of their biological origins, I reckon in some aspect they're cuckoo babies - they're not just thematically similar, they're all part of the same 'generation' in the grand scheme of things.

That said, one of the things I love lots about the show is its ham-fistedness. It's not subtle at all in its 'subtext'/foreshadowing/semiotics.

Clothing. Totally ham-fisted, with Meg:

And, more obviously, MAX:

The other parallells with Max are pretty obvious... like, their names ('Max' is 'Sam' reversed); and with Meg, too - Meg Masters for frick's sake. (Gee, I wonder who Meg's daddy could be?)

I keep getting excited about where the show is going, but also a bit terrified at how easily I can see it jumping the shark. I mean... I dunno. I may seem like a Sam fangirl, but honestly I am just as much a Dean fangirl. But my love for them is completely different. (And I freaking love that this show can cover all bases for me.) I love that Sam's everything I heart in a fictional character. All his wacky character-development and -arc, the way he's constructed, back story, all that... as a fictional character, I'm totally in love with Sam. He hits my buttons. On the other side, Dean gets me going in an entirely different way - Dean's meta-position in the text gives me a big fat intellectual hard-on. He solidifies (and at the same time, fluid-ifies) the entire discursive structure of the text. I just... nnng. Dean. Do me, and my brain plz kthx.

So anyway, shark-jumping. If Dean's position in the text is degraded and he gets sucked into the sub-level of the fictional text, its authority will be severely compromised and the shark, it will be jumped.

So. *crosses fingers*

PS. I am tagging all my Supernatural meta posts with spn:meta. FYI.

Man. I want to see where they go with Sam's Speshul Powers or whatever, but I really do not want this show to become Sam the Ghost Slayer and his sidekick Dean, you know? It would not be the same show and I would be very sad. :(

a) Randomly friended. Hope yr not opposed. Or something.

b) Totes never noticed the clothing-similarities or, if I did, assumed that's what All Cool Kids Were Wearing. Something to ponder. *schedules pondering time*

c) 'Jumping the shark' may be my new favourite phrase. *nabs* :)

Huh. I had not noticed the clothing similarities with Meg, although one of my first reactions to the costuming in Nightmare was was to wonder if I was supposed to have that anvil-sized dent in my forehead. The pants in Nightmare are similar too, although I think one of them has on dark blue jeans and the other is wearing ... dark blue workpants?

flyby commenting and speculation

Sorry for the random comment; I wandered over here from Mary's journal, I think. Just wanted to say I've enjoyed your meta posts! What great thoughts. *muses*

Following on from the Max/Meg/Sam parallels, I doubt that Sidekick!Dean will become a reality, particularly because I suspect Sam's powers are going to be a corrupting/problematic feature, rather than the superman-type-hero powers. The deaths of Mary and Jess are what have pushed him into the life he has now, hunting with the side-effect of developing his powers. That seems like a deliberate move on the part of the 'demon' or whatever it is that is responsible.

So while Dean hunts in order to save people, and Sam helps and wants to find the demon, and they both have good intentions in doing this, the driving/shaping force behind those actions might put them on opposite sides of the fence at some point. And what Sam wants is often not the same as what Sam gets.

So. Maybe. *crackpot theories* :)
