I have seen some new movies lately and have had thoughts about them, but the thoughts are only very fleeting and are generally chased by winchesters with guns out of my head again.
But tonight I saw Superman Returns again, so I'll scribble down some thoughts while I'm thinking them:
- I love the meta-textuality of "the son becomes the father, the father becomes the son" - in terms of the original films in relation to this one, and the comics in relation to the films. Whole familial thing going on there, I'd say.
- The elemental dichotomy of good/bad represented in the fire/water iconography in the film. See:
... Clark emerging from a fiery crater
... Superman's basking in/feeding off the sun
... Lois's cigarette lighter
... Lex's boat/ocean time
... all the times the crystals + water = monstrous creations
... Clark almost drowning, giant ocean, yadda yadda
... The fountain taking up most of the background when Superman's (I keep going to type 'SPM') being hoodwinked by 'rescuing' Kitty.
- I got much more of a sense the second time of Kal-El's loneliness. The first time round it was more of alieness, of being an outcast, but this time... it was more just loneliness. The constant commenting on the fact that Clark hadn't actually found a home since he'd been back finally just hit me.
And now for some Pirates spoilers:
Firstly: a couple of criticisms/questions:
- Why the hell aren't Will and Elizabeth married yet? srsly. Was Will being gradually inducted to civilised society, a-la Eliza Dolittle or Princess Mary of Denmark? Because counting the bark rings around Norry suggests it's been some years between the end of the last one and the start of this one. At least a couple of years.
- I was a little wary at the start, I felt that a lot of the jokes in the first forty mins or so were recycled from the first film (why is the rum gone, etc).
BUT. Oh boy, did it pick up. SO MUCH FUN. Stuff I liked:
- The evolution of Elizabeth's character. In the first one she was Mary-Sue precocious, young and stupid but with that magical charm and courageousness that made everyone love her and get out of jams. This film? That Elizabeth, but grown up. Still elements of Mary-Sueishness (but that's pretty par for the course with any female character, and some male ones, innit?), but it's like a lot of the eye-rollingness of the last one could be explained away by her youth - as if the immaturity of her characterisation was due because it was viewed through her eyes. Anyway. was much more impressed by her this time around, esp in comparison.
- Will! I love the fact that they made use of Orlando's glorious acting to really enhance Will's earnest cluelessness. He really is a good-hearted boy. Will hasn't changed at all between this film and the last, and that really is a *strength*. But, I think what did it for me, really, what really actually made me *like* Will for the first time ever (not that i disliked him before, but yaknow, no particular fondness either), was that moment in the final scene where he's watching Elizabeth being all teary and miserable. And Will, goddamn. He's just seen his fiance snog Jack, seen Jack die terribly nobly, and now said fiance is apparently devastated and grief-striken by his death, and Will? Before PirateQueenLady mentions it, is about to do anything it takes to take away Elizabeth's pain, even if that means finding Jack. For her. Will, doing whatever it takes to alleviate the love of his life's pain, even if it's finding the man she loves more (as it seems to him). OH WILL.
Anyway.
I have Norry-thoughts as well, but now it's late and I'm tired.

LMAO!!! that is so true!
I loved this Superman...I also got that lonliness thing, and almost a vulnerability, even in posession of his super powers.

I think there was a lot of water even in Lex's scenes inside buildings, lots of fish tanks, IV drips and sea theme stuff. Even that train set was a bit wet for a 'Smallville' set train set.
Will may have had to have bought out Brown the blacksmith, bought a house, saved up for the ... um, ring? He might not have had to pay for the wedding but there is no freaking way Governor Swan would let his daughter get married to someone without a house or a business of his own.
He was still technically an apprentice wasn't he?
I didn't think it was 'years' though, maybe one?
I have Norry thoughts as well. Very, very nice Norry thoughts.
Oh good lord that fight scene! With the fighting and the -listen to me dammit you stupid bastards- of Elizabeth and P&R taking temptation and the
