Whee!
This year in June the Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation (they have a foundation for that. AWESOME.) is holding another slash convention! (Find out apart past WASFF Slashcons here.)
The most exciting thing about it (for me, at the very least) is that I've been invited to be the "Guest of Honour"!!1zomg!
Which means I get to fly to the other side of the country (no, seriously. The other side) to talk about juicy juicy subtext, and fic, and vids and wikis and podcasts and academia and OMG!OTPs and porn AND, I'm told this is my biggest selling point: Yaks.
So, like, everyone should totally come to Perth and have fun with me, and a bunch of other slashers, in a giant slashy weekend-long sleepover. For reals.
If you want more info, the official flyer for the first announcement is here:
For the first time, and through the generous support of the Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation, Slashcon has been able to invite a Guest of Honour!
Guest of Honour:
angstslashhope! Hope is a Melbourne-based fan, slasher, writer, trouble-maker, vidder, wiki-whizz, enabler, Organization For Transformative Works Wiki Committee Chair and all-round fabulous person, who has written a thesis on Supernatural fanfic. Fannishly, she started in Lord of the Rings and then moved through Lotrips, The Faculty, 21 Jump Street, Firefly/Serenity and now Supernatural. You need to meet Hope, before her Die Hard 4 obsession gets too embarrassing.
Accommodation:
In anticipation of larger number of attendees than usual, and as part of our continued plans for world domination, Slashcon 08 has booked two cottages, with the intention of offering con-goers the choice between 'loud' and 'quiet' accommodation. When you're booking, make sure to tell us whether you want to party or sleep.
Food:
chaosmanor will be doing the cooking, as at previous Slashcons. There will be be vegetarian lasagna on the menu. When you're booking, please list food preferences and allergies.
Transport:
Your convenors will be wrangling car-pooling. If you need a lift, or are travelling down by car and have room for more passengers, let us know!
What you need to bring:
Bedding, towel, clothes, personal supplies, alcohol, laptops and snacks. We provide three meals a day, and tea and coffee. Fairbridge will be cold in June, so dress warm.
Programming:
cupidsbow will be putting together a program. If there's something you want to see on it, let her know. If you want to deliver a paper, lead a panel, read a story, or teach interpretative dance, this is your chance. Email Cathy at cupidsbower(at)gmail(dot)com.
Cost:
$80 per person. If you're planning on coming along, please register your interest by emailing Elaine at chaosmanor(at)gmail(dot)com. Payment can be made to Elaine in person, if you can catch up with her before the con, or you can pay at the con. Early registration is vital, however.
Bwee!

And you've had two Worldcons, and will hopefully have another in 2010.
But I don't think anyone has persuaded ASFF to underwrite a Slashcon yet. Why not? Why has this not happened?

So, um, all that kind of stuff just seems to float by in my periphery, because it's not really a community I identify with. (Yet another reason I am so glad to have a *committee* in OTW :)) Possibly I need to get more involved in my local culture!

I settled into mainstream fandom before I (re)discovered slash. I found slash the first time around in the late 80s, with original Trek. I even had a fic in one of the old style zines, back then. Then I lost touch with slash, until about 2001, when

Not trying to say "younger people are more into the internet!" because - no. But there are different kinds of spaces created with origins in different places, and it's not very easy to move between them as an individual - they have their own cultural practices etc, even if they are both geeky and would possibly mash together alright en masse!

I'm a baby-boomer, not a Gen-Xer. I have grandchildren, you know.
But you might be onto something. As someone who is part of the process of ogranising the larger cons, as well as small slashcons, I've been part of the interminable 'how do we attract the youngsters?' discussions. Then we have a con, and it's awash with teenagers dressed up as anime characters, and everyone stops fretting.
There are lots of folks out there who aren't interested in attending face-to-face gatherings, whose social needs are being met online. Those of us who got into fandom before the 'net are still keen on hanging out in the same actual space and talking, but we're just old.

I reckon I'd attend more events if they were run by my bunch as well as that bunch (and I'd say that the anime crowd are a bunch all of their own *g*). I have attended a few things, but they never really feel like *my* things.
Probably because by and large, I'm lazy when it comes to socialising :)
anyhoo!

A long weekend of slash? Awesome.
I really should get more into fandom, because I'd never know about this if you'd never posted it.

You should totally come! :D
