... new powers will allow police to arrest and fine people for "causing annoyance" to World Youth Day participants and permit partial strip searches at hundreds of Sydney sites, beginning today.

The laws, which operate until the end of July, have the potential to make a crime of wearing a T-shirt with a message on it, undertaking a Chaser-style stunt, handing out condoms at protests, riding a skateboard or even playing music, critics say.

Yeah, I was particularly o_O about the example where flashing someone would be a $1000 fine but wearing an anti-catholic shirt would be $5000. WHAT.

it's nice to know that the catholic church's long-standing connections with FASCISM have survived unscathed down through the centuries...

really, this is outrageous. i heard someone say on the news that if this was Muslim World Youth Day (or Buddhist World Youth Day or..whatever) then people would be screaming in protest, and it's bloody true.

may there be mass civil disobedience, is all i can say.
