On the banks of the Tiber

Supernatural, Sam(/)Dean, R (for violence/horror), AUish

Note: marked as slash for the faint of (wincest) heart. The author would like it known that she prefers to consider this a gen story.

Read the sequel: Field of Mars.

This story was nominated in the 'Best Horror' and 'Slash: Best Alternate Universe' categories of The Lawrence Awards. Thank you!

I really enjoyed this, though I wonder what Dean would have done had Sam been the one bit first.

Holy shit, this ruled.

Holy shit. You are clearly made of awesome.

It's totally not fair that you're able to make a vid and write a fic while sick, dude.

This is utterly amazing. I think the thing which punches hardest is how their worldviews slip and shift as the story progresses. I have a deep love for unreliable narrators/viewpoints, and Dean is that here from the word go. The way things are revealed, and then how they turn on a pin, and the things that stay the same even as the rest changes is all just fantastic. I want to say more, but I don't know how to say it. You are an incredibly accomplished storyteller, and I love this example of your work.

[identity profile] zortified.livejournal.com 2006-05-19 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
This was fantastic. Amazing, loved seeing the changing from Dean's point of view, and how Sam dealt with it - becoming one as well, to help keep Dean out of trouble. ;-)

I would so love to see the coda when dad finds them, heartbreaking as it might be.

Oh, very cool. Had me all confused and fooled until about the middle there and then - very cool.

Wow. That was really wonderful! I like how smooth and flowing the story and the writing are, and about halfway through I thought to myself, 'This isn't going where I think it is, is it?' and it was! I think most authors wouldn't write this the way you did, you know? Carry the idea all the way through like that, and well, I really, really like how you finished it.

And just in case my rambling didn't make the point clear: I really like this story. :D

[identity profile] crimsonsenya.livejournal.com 2006-05-19 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Where should I begin... This has to be one of the coolest fics I've read in this fandom. The whole metamorphosis was so well-written with a language both descriptive and sensorial matching the change of the brothers into primal beings.

So very Sam to make such a detailed plan of action and then put it in motion step by step. IMHO it was perfectly in character for him to turn everything in their lives around to adapt to the new situation. I loved how there was no question that Sam wouldn't follow Dean down the path and protect Dean from himself, as I have no doubt, if free, Dean would have killed himself as soon as he'd realized what he'd become.

He leans down and swipes the flat of his tongue against it and Sam swears and kicks – “Shit, Dean—!” – and it’s gritty in Dean’s mouth and the bullet is warm from Sam’s flesh when he tongues it, urges it out, then cleans the skin around it.

There’s an edge of humour in Sam’s voice when Dean sits up to look down into his face again. “You’re not going to pee all over my stuff now, are you?” The hint of a smirk, the curl of his lip, bared teeth for an instant.

“Pee,” Dean scoffs. “You’re such a girl.”

“You wish,” Sam laughs outright this time, but he’s licking at the corners of Dean’s mouth, seeking out the residue of the kill.

Sweet Lord of the Rings, just had to copy this whole part here! I'm a perverted freak I know, but that scene was hot as hell, and you even spiked it with humour. Simply wow.

In conclusion: you left the readers both satiated and hungry for more. YOU WIN at Winchester fics! :D

Great story, I liked figuring out what was going on alongside with Dean.

Gah, this was beautiful... and oh man, AFTER, the boys and their pack of two. Even between the moons, the touches of wolf in Dean's bared teeth, when Sam tells Dean about the Impala, the bullet scene... gives me shivers in the bestest way.

Rrr. Werewolf fic. Supernartual-fic. Mmm. yay!
There are not enogh writers out there who write werwolves. And you did it well. thanks!

I was a bit slow and it took me a while to figure it out..lol! Creepy , thought provoking and well written. :-)
ext_12410: (the dean show - dean with flower)

[identity profile] tsuki-no-bara.livejournal.com 2006-05-19 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
it took me the entire story to figure out the title. >.< i'm slow, what can i say.

your dean-voice is FANTASTIC - i can hear him. "And fuck, Google-fu? Since when did that become a part of his vocabulary?" heh. and How am I still here? Dean wants to ask, but thinks Sam might not take that too well for a number of reasons and the little play of dominance and submission at the end, dean staring at sam's throat and sam going limp under him, and the really subtle way they get more and more... wolfy while still being recognizably dean and sam. (and the way it bothers dean less and less.... he's more upset sam got rid of the impala.)

seriously, it's all good.

[identity profile] jinx37kat.livejournal.com 2006-05-19 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
“Not boring,” Dean’s voice mimics the matter-of-factness, with a heavy dose of incredulity. “You are so adopted.'

I know... out of this entire story, I latch onto this one line. Sorry, but I just had to say that this is the first time that I've heard Dean say this in a fic and have been expecting/waiting for someone to write him saying something like this for a very long time. This was great! :)

[identity profile] buhfly.livejournal.com 2006-05-19 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this. Absolutely. I don't suppose you'd want to write more in this world...? *puppy eyes*

[identity profile] diamondback158.livejournal.com 2006-05-20 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, this was beautifully vivid. I've said this before, but I don't often like present tense because of how it can effect pacing if it's not handled well, but this fic grabbed me and held on, and it suits the mood perfectly. I love how you keep pretty tight to Dean's POV and don't go into the fine details of his change, only the pain and disorientation. There's no werewolf exposition over-indulging in description of jaws and claws. The aftermath of the boy's attacks/hunts/kills says enough. Love it.

[identity profile] darkhavens.livejournal.com 2006-05-20 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. That was wonderful! I can totally see Sam doing something like this - planning it all so Dean doesn't get a chance to do what we know he would. He's such a clever research assistant. *g*

[identity profile] javana12.livejournal.com 2006-05-20 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
unusual... but interesting. thanks. keep up the good work.

[identity profile] cocombat.livejournal.com 2006-05-20 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
omg!
I saw this just before I had to go out, and, shit, here I finally am, and -

Argh!
*flail*
Squuuuueee!
loves you!

You wrote werewolf fic! *hearts you to pieces!*
I. *fangirls madly*
How can I encompass just how much this rocks?
And it's kinda-sorta-almost my fault. Yes!
Are you in need of one spare fangirl?
Only slightly used, good for all those odd jobs, and hard to reach places (o_0 ok, not intended as dodgily as that may have sounded... *laughs*).

Ok, on the re-read:
I love the wee foreshadowing involved in referring to the 'shudder-growl' of the Impala, how he had to 'paw the lid' and his stomach as a 'beast' and 'protecting it's fucking nest'. I think my favourite is just in the first sentence though, writhing, teeth clenched, spine jerking - classic werewolf transformation imagery. *geeks heartily*

Oh, and despite the fact that it's from Dean's POV, that you can actually pick up that uh. Sam's *lying* to you Dean, something you might pick up if you were a little less dopey at the moment. o_0
The interaction over the research assistant-ing, is perfect, in character Sam & Dean, and just that little spot of 'normality' makes the what is to come so much harder, because you never take away from their characterisation, make them anything other than believably them. Really good.

And really, oh my god, do you get some kind of geeky thrill out of throwing little foreshadowing elements in? Because if you do, I *luff* you. Very much.
I mean. Ketchup smear around the mouth. Standard horror movie "it's not blood yet, but you know it *will* be..." - watch me flail!
Eeee! *spins round in circles*

On the first read through I *didn't* get what Sam was burying. But, oh. And to see Dean getting it. 5, 4, 3, 2 -
Ow.

Also on the re-read, I'm left wondering - what would have happened if Dean had known he was infected?
I can't see him accepting it, I can't see him endangering Sam, I'm wondering if he *would* have been able to live with it, and if that was Sam's reasoning behind doing what he did.
That Dean wouldn't be able to live with this unless Sam was living with him too, unless he had Sam to protect. It's... very bittersweet, that given the ultimate choice, Sam would do this for Dean, for them, but bitter that it has to come up.
He’s had a whole month
*shivers*
Yeah, I think Sam considered all the angles before going with this.

[identity profile] cocombat.livejournal.com 2006-05-20 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)

And... ow. Yeah. I knew this was coming. As much as I hoped that they would find some, completeness? Wild, isolated (no John, no car), but not alone (each other), almost a happy ending for a given value of happy (He’s picking venison fibers from his teeth), well, more melancholic, but, you get the idea (well hey, you wrote it), but, this is a horror, clearly since the beginning, and they were never going to get off even this easy.
:(

And so it comes.
I'm caught up in little things here, like the use of flank even as humans. Dean tonguing the bullet from the wound? incredibly powerful image, and then the waver between them as animals, as people, reminding us that they're still Sam & Dean, it's still a tragedy, because they're still so recognisably them.

licking at the corners of Dean’s mouth, seeking out the residue of the kill
And, another facet I find neat* about this fic is you could almost label this as gen, because - sexual tension is never raised above the surface, to a conscious level, it's all in what they're willing to do for each other. To die, to kill, each other important above all else. Also the ways in which they're become animals, and pack behaviour, their actions, become 'ambiguous' in human terms.

* To clarify, *waves slashy flag high*, I love the porn, but this was pretty nifty in a way, the ambiguity.

And. Final section. Yes. It hasn't happened yet, but this is the ambiguously apocolyptic ending, the doom is clearly upon them the axe yet to fall (the door yet to be battered down by hordes of zombies). And. Ow. It hurts so. Because they're still them, Dean still has his moral code,
“It was a kill,” Dean says, tone stiff. “Not a feed.”
*loves*
and really, I don't think he's changed, that this wouldn't be his normal reaction. This is and always will be what he would do for Sam, and it's sad because the change is in how his father will view this, and there will be no understanding, and no mercy.
*clutches little broken heart together*

In conclusion, I really like this piece, and if you ever need a dedicated zombie slave? Hey, I'm your gal.
:)

This is fantastic; I love the slow reveal of what's really going on, and Dean and Sam's subtle shifts in personality and action as time passes. And how Sam knew exactly how Dean would react if he had known and instead did his damndest to make sure things went the way Sam wanted them too. It's such a perfectly Sam thing to do. Also, I am a huge sucker for unreliable narrators (and had never really put that together until [livejournal.com profile] monkeycrackmary mentioned it) and this story totally rocked that; I loved Dean's perspective and how we learn what's going on at the same time he does. It's just such an effective narrative style for a story like this; wonderfully suspenseful.

The only things I don't get, and I think this speaks more to my lack of werewolf mythology than any obtuse writing on your part, but what was up with the buried silver?

oh man this packed a punch and a half. I got it when Sam drugged Dean and then I was just *floored*. Genius. And the moral boundaries shifting together with the human ones while the boundary between the two of them just melted away - beautiful. Also, I skimmed back up after finishing the story and only then did the title register - hah! Much kudos for this story.

Because, darnit, I read the sequel first, with my jaw hanging open because it was so incredibly heartbreaking, and had to hightail it over here to see what I'd missed. Whoa. Just amazing. Totally deserving of all awards and accolades.
