Awwwwww. Lovely, all three of them. Sad and hurting but also hopeful at the same time. I feel especially ... hmm, at peace after Mary's. I think I liked Sam's the best; there seemed like such a bigger story there that it just really touched me.
God, number two is... this might sound weird, but it's physical, and triggering sense-memories for me and is perfectly inside Sam's head. Just... really, really satisfying to read (not that way :P).
And strong Mary! Yay! "No, really," she says, unclenching her teeth. "It's--" she catches a flash of yellow in the corner of her eye, sticks her fingers in her mouth and gives a piercing whistle. *happy*
Yay! I was mainly just playing around with these. I love the idea of John having an estranged sister. In fact, I love the idea of John just alienating everyone because he's an annoying, pig-headed dick.
I love that Sam's birthday memories always feature Dean so prominently. I just love the fact that Dean's been his one constant in life and their lives are just that intertwined.
i love all of sam's birthday flashbacks, and that they're all mostly happy ones. even his sixteenth, because dean's there to remember and wish him a happy. i love that john learns to hunt from his dad, and that mary whistles to call herself a cab when she goes into labor. (such a little detail, but really nice.) and i really love that sam's phone rings just as he's about to dial, and that it's dean calling before sam can call him.
You are so forgiven for what you did to my heart in the last one. *hearts them so much*
The way the light looked kind of blue and washed out when they came back out of the theatre, and the way Dad stopped leaning against the car and stood up straight when they came toward him.
gorgeous, gorgeous birthday memories. i love the snippets getting shorter, more disjointed. i love the smells and tastes and sounds and colour saturated images (well, they were in my head). and. and. 'scarecrow', and brotherlove/angst, and ... YOU!!! gah! (of course i was always going to love this one).
i also ADORE #3. apart from the whole pregnancy/baby/giving birth thing. this line: It's gonna get a whole lot messier than this, okay? ... awesome.
Oh, these are all so good. But I think my favorite bit is the end of John's: "When he gets back, he thinks, it’ll be different. But for now, it’s just him against the world."
Great job on these looks at pivotal times in the Winchesters’ lives. In the first one, I really liked your take on some of the things that shaped John into the man he is when we first met him. In the second one, I like how you captured the sense of how alone Sam has felt, out on his own, and the revelation that he actually went to go find Dean at one point. In the third once, I liked your portrayal of how calm Mary is even as the grocery-store employee is freaking out, and then John’s solid presence at the end.
Favorite lines:
The blade draws across the whetstone in slow, easy strokes and John’s excited about the deer they’re going to kill, sure, but his shoulders are still aching with the ghost-kick of the Winchester and all he can think about is hunting something bigger.
I really like this, from the description at the start to the inkling of John the demon hunter at the end.
She’s always been a bit on edge, like she was just waiting for it to happen. Dad used to tell John that she hadn’t always been like that, that it was only since Dad got back from the war. War did something to her, same way it’d done something to him.
Good insight here into how war changes not only those who fight, but those who have to stay behind and wait.
Her last words to him aren’t shouted but delivered deadly quiet, and she was begging before but now she’s just telling him as it is, plain and simple. If you leave, don’t come back.</ I>
Ooh, this is good, the idea that John’s Stanford ultimatum to Sam stems from what happened to John all those years ago.
"Hey, kid." Sam closes his eyes. Dean's voice is just as rough, just as tired. Sam wonders where Dean's been in the sixty-two days since Omaha, wonders if Dean got out his cell and scrolled to his brother's number, thumb hovering over the connect button, as much as Sam did. "How're things?"
Oh, boys. They miss each other so much.
She has to call John. Tell him her birthday dinner's cancelled. They were only eating in, anyway; too far along for them to want to stray too far from home, so there'd be no reservations to deal with.
I love how she’s being all practical here. Not panicking, just thinking of the things that she won’t be able to do because she’s a little tied up just now.
"Hey," his mouth curls almost mischievously. "Happy birthday, huh?"

You write John so well.
My heart ached for Sam in #2, and your Mary in #3 is how Mary should be written. This is wonderful. :)
