i said i wasn't going to talk about serenity again til it's on general release, but i lied a bit, because i have to say:
if you've ever considered watching firefly, watch the series before the movie comes out.
that is to say, NOW. seriously, the movie is absolutely incredible, and the series is freaking brilliant as well. the movie is going to be a BIG DEAL when it's released; please trust me now when i say the movie will be a billion times better if you have the background of the series behind it. not that it wouldn't be fab as a standalone as well, because as i said, in movie stakes, it is teh awesome.
so yes, if you've ever considered watching firefly - or heck, if you're READING THIS RIGHT NOW, go and hire or buy the dvds (i know if you're in australia you can get the entire series from JB hifi for $28, or HMV for $30). if you're in the states, i'm told that the SciFi channel is going to air all the episodes (including three unaired) beginning on July 22. that's tomorrow. and seriously, there aren't that many episodes (15 or 16?), you can get through it in a weekend. it's WORTH IT.
and the fans and word of mouth is how this is going to be marketed - essentially how the film got made in the first place. so SPREAD THE WORD. (i think i might go and make a banner, actually, so people can post around.) if the movie is successful enough, they will make more.
and it *is* a brilliant show - it's not all techy and hardcore sci fi, it's got the brilliance of joss whedon's wonderful characters, only this time they're grown ups instead of annoying teenage girls (see? i'm not a buffy fan and i fucking ADORE firefly). and it's funny. you will LOVE IT.
DO IT. NOW.
eta: also, you can buy it from amazon or check it out on ebay. well worth the investment.

That being said, I had been wondering how the marketing would go. I can assume, then, that people aren't going to be on Conan, Leno, etc to do press for this thing? But it is going to have a large release to most theatres?
God, I love you for making this post. I was getting antsy.

in terms of a general release? i don't know. i think that's what they're doing the pre-screenings for now, to see how well it's received (the answer being: very).
KEEP AVOIDING SPOILERS! joss, and the rest of the cast/crew/EVERYONE involved most definitely have NOT dropped the ball ;)

i'm working on fan recruitment, myself. it's amazing to see just how effective it can be, especially when the show is really worth it.
