My favorite of my own stories this year:
Definitely Stroke of Luck, which is the longest thing i've ever written, coming in at over 20,000 words. I worked really hard and steadily at this one, and am very happy with the way it turned out. there's a whole lot in this one that i'm just waiting for someone to ask me about :D Also still trying to ferment up a sequel. Also very fond of Bower and its sequel, susurrus.
I also really liked my crossovers this year, especially the Firefly ones. a good crossover is satisfying like a good meal - you'd never know how the chef knew how to put those ingredients together, in those quantities, and cook them for that long... but damn, it tastes good. mmm, stories. *salivates*
I recall loving my 21JS stories this year too, but that was so long ago now - all I've got on the brain is Firefly, now.
My best story this year:
I'd have to say Stroke of Luck again - because i don't think i've been more pleased/satisfied with something i've written before. But both brute force and Five things that never happened to Simon Tam (1/5) were surprising hits with the readers, so if feedback is a measure of success...
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
possibly Lost in the Woods, as it hardly got any feedback and that was one crossover i was *really* happy with. i guess maybe deadwood isn't a popular fandom? oh well.
Most fun story:
Just about any of the crossovers, but if we're going with unmixed nuts, then i'd have to say Doctor line - do not cross.
Most sexy story:
*ponderates* Stroke of Luck has the highest rating of anything I've written, probably, though Noble as a grape has some hanky panky in it also. please, don't ask me if it's actually 'sexy' or not, i have terrible performance anxiety with my sex scenes as it is.
Story with single sexiest moment:
argh! see above answer. or, provide your own answer, hah. i have no idea.
Hardest story to write:
Cicatrix, my first story for a challenge. boy, i had to force this out, in the end. seem to be accepted relatively well, though.
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" fic:
huhnn. maybe brute force? which is like a window into my crack-tastic mind, in which river is indeed yoda. or maybe in slightly angstier points, mawkish. in which things go a bit differently.
Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
And again, we go to Stroke of Luck. I was concerned throughout writing this that i was taking the characters too much OOC, and in looking so closely at that element I found my perceptions of the characters broadened and got more complex. All just folk now is another one, i suppose, though it had the same effect for different reasons - trying to capture in very brief character studies how things were for the characters in a post-movie timeframe. simplyfying things down seems as good a way to clarify as writing tens of thousands of words.
Biggest disappointment:
probably the less-than-lukewarm response i received for Prodigal. either it's a really awful story or people like jayne/simon more than i thought. i guess i thought that maybe some of the other challenge participants (maybe even the person i wrote it for!) would leave feedback. that made me a bit sad. i kinda like the story, myself.
Biggest surprise:
the response i got for brute force.
Most telling story:
of... the author? most telling of what? maybe Cicatrix... or Smitten.
What's next?
I want to write a sequel to Stroke of Luck, and also have a vague fluffy Firefly crew bunny hopping around limply. I'm feeling a bit uninspired at the moment. Have been watching stacks of new tv, though, so maybe new fandoms on the horizon. oh, i'd like to write a Firefly/Carnivale crossover, but will have to re-watch season 1 & what i can find of season 2, first. Also, I'll have a thesis to write in 2006, heh.
