Okay, so I like Battlestar Galactica now. Like, a lot.
When i first started watching i couldn't get into it. it's like, i could see the potential for interesting inter-personal relationships between characters, but the show didn't seem to be about that. it wasn't about people, it was about Humanity (with a capital H). the human race, the division between military and government, blah blah blah. all that big-scale, will-the-human-race-survive-or-not stuff. which, i'm not all that interested in. it bores me. i'm more interested in the studies of humanity that's played out through the individual characters, their flaws, their strengths, their love/hate for eachother. not robot vs. human.
so, it took me until "act of contrition" before i started to like the show a lot. because starbuck(/)apollo. starbuck-apollo-adama. starbuck-apollo-adama(-zach). omfg! so. in love with that whole dynamic GUH. now that's what I'M talking about when I write the above paragraph about what i like to see. I cried and i flailed and squealed with glee and sobbed with sadness in those two episodes. omg HEART. them!
see, the president is okay, but she doesn't grab me. gaius and gina just bore me so, SO much, and the colonel, meh, seen it all before. boomer and helo on caprica seem to have that *potential* to be interesting... but it's more about the 'humans vs. robots!' Epic Battle, which, yawn. so, i'm crossing my fingers that there gets to be MORE playing out of the adama^3&starbuck relationship(s).
anyhoo. don't spoil it for me if there isn't, eh?

I think it was counted as the first half of the season *checks DVD set* OMG! You don't get it in the DVD box set! OMGWTF?
Have you seen the mini? If you haven't, I'd definitely recommend it.
There is so much more of their relationship playing out even in the most recent episodes, I think the whole Adama/Kara/Lee dynamic is pretty much central to most of the story lines.
The whole 'is Earth a myth or isn't it' thing when we obviously know it isn't is interesting, weather they'll ever Reach Earth or not.
=D
Adama: *looking at two crew members* They need to be having babies.
Lee: Now?

I think I love my space shows in different ways for different reasons, Firefly is like I-have-no-idea-who said, 'home'. It's intimate, it's personal and warm and cozy spot in the cold dark black.
Battlestar Galactica is Epic, it's big chunks of pain, both mental and emotional. I like it for it's muddying of the definitions of who and what is Human and Humane. Who gets to decide what direction they will take the rest of their people. That the Humans and the Cylons are sometimes as Good or as Evil as each other.

It's funny, because everything I love about it is basically the opposite about what you love. Starbuck and Apollo and Adama don't really do much for me. I like the B-characters (including Boomer and the chief on the ship).
But I agree with you re: epic robots/human battle. It annoys me. Although I love the whole 'how are we going to survive now that it's all fallen apart' vibe. Yeah, I'm sure that's a huge surprise!
Also, I get sick of all the talk about god. I mean, I know why it's there. But sometimes, I feel it gets pushed a little too far.

and i think i'd like the post-apocalyptic stuff too, if it wasn't just all so much on a political, bureaucratic plane. like, we *never* get to see how the average joes are faring post-world's end.

Yeah, it would be good to see some of the stuff that is happening on the other ships. I seem to remember hints of this (and one specific ep, won't say anything, just in case you haven't watched it yet). But yes. What's going on on the sidelines??

What I want to know is - how does it compare to Firefly?

up until the 5th or 6th episode of BSG, i had to kind of force myself to watch it. it didn't feel like it had a light moment - not that it was angsty and gratuitously goth or gory - but the tone of it was just relentlessly somber. i've just reached a point now where they're paying enough attention now to individual characters that i can actually be happy when they are happy, yaknow? which is rarely.
i reckon, watch the mini-series (which is like the pilot, a bit over 2 hours long, i think) which sets it all up. if you're engaged enough to continue, then do so.

it usually just takes me a while to get to where i love it. hell, i watched firefly for the first time in december 2004. see how long it took me to get hook-line-and-sinkered?
give BSG a shot ;)
