time for some immanent violence.
I discovered another character arc/trait that i absolutely love in any text at all, really - the particular trait in a male character to exhibit strength and wisdom through demonstrating choice... or rather, choosing to withhold physical violence/machismo, because they can recognise it isn't the answer to everything.
case in point: ep.1.04 of farscape, with the gauntlet, and what it does to people. let me just take a moment to say here that i love the dynamic between john/d'argo/aeryn - so i like this episode quite a bit for what the gauntlet does to them. the ep builds up throughout with the gauntlet exagerrating the aspects of the warriors they see as their strengths; their brash machismo. d'argo is primally violent; aeryn thinks she's invincible. and yet when crichton has the gaunlet on, it doesn't exagerrate dangerous traits - he 'feels really great', and when it comes to fighting, he's perfect. perfect aim, perfect speed - perfect warrior/fighter. the gauntlet didn't give him these skills, it just stimulated the aggressive elements of his character.
in other words, crichton putting on the gauntlet demonstrated to the audience (if not the other warriors he was so concerned to impress) that crichton isn't weak - he *chooses* not to use violence, chooses the wiser path of negotiation, compassion. the fact that he made a choice is what really demonstrates his strength.
which segue-ways nicely into supernatural 1.15 (aka. 'texas chainsaw ripoff') ohmigosh. more than a few people have mentioned coming just a little (or perhaps more than a little) at ickle sammy's sudden display of VIOLENCE. and i have to admit, i am part of that camp also.
I JUST LOVE VIOLENCE. i love violence when it's like that, like crichton's violence. like violence isn't the character's whole shtick, it's used only when neccessary. So that scene in SPN was so -freaking- awesome, because, like, wow. sammy knows how to fight. he's not weak, or clueless; and yes, he is actually quite built under those flannel shirts and hoodies he likes to hunch into. woah.
It was just so perfect for that episode - it's like, the winchesters know how to protect themselves from the supernatural badass things. they know how to read & recite incantations, set protection charms, know the 'alternative methods' to destroying things depending on their individual weaknesses. this episode was about humans, not supernatural spirits or demons. thus, the very base primal violence was required. and damn, did it get served up.
love. LOVE.

I think the attractiveness of it the way you describe is is like, we're attracted to displays of strength, maybe even for primal evolutionanary reasons, but our higher brains and education have shifted the definition of strength some, we're *not* hot for random, mindless violence, at all. We like strength that is a combo of physical power and brainpower - control over the self, the ability to think and choose and not be a slave to one's reptile brain, etc etc.
Dunno if I'm making sense, but anyhow. I agree witjoo. :D

Chiana: (punches Jool straight in the face) See: Violence. You'll get the hang of it.
