Speaking of character costuming metaphors, I love the Dean & John costuming links as well. Made pretty blatant in Something Wicked:
(and there are like, a million screencaps I could make of Dean in this case)
with the flipped collar on the leather jacket, the shirt-over-teeshirt beneath it, the whole rockabilly/greaser look they've got going on there. I positively squealed when I saw flashback!John, because Dean wasn't just your classic James Dean rebel, he was just being like Daddy, who was dorky then, but Dean makes it cool and retro now.
Less anvil-like is their costuming in Shadow:
(I love this shot also because it really shows what

The orangey-toned plaid shirt and khaki undershirt to Dean's khaki jacket (and John's black overcoat to Dean's black undershirt).
And while I'm talking about John and Dean, I'm not quite sure what to make of the seemingly throwaway comment from John to Dean about the Impala. It seems to me that it could mean a few things, whether all at once or one and not the others:
1) Exposition. Er, if you're a fan of Supernatural and don't believe that the creators are aware of the fandom and give us an awful lot of fanservice, what the hell sandpit is your head buried in? Even if Eric Kripke doesn't know what the internets is, having a packed convention panel audience scream "METALLICAR!" at him might be a slight hint that the fans have a fetish for the car. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to put a throwaway line in there to give us more info about it - i.e. It was John's, bequeathed to Dean.
2) The Winchesters totally have pack mentality - Dean and John especially on a kind of primal level. Sam tries not to buy into it, but is still clearly a part of that dynamic/aware of it, at least. Papa was reasserting his Alpha status, just as much as he was with the whole "I'M THE BOSS AND I DON'T HAVE TO TELL YOU ANYTHING!" *pees all over everything*
3) John was joking. Teasing. You know, that Sense Of Humour thing
Oh, and how much do I love Dean's "I told you I'd come back for you!" to the vampire-snacks he's rescuing in DMB? I just had such an overwhelming surge of love for Dean at that point, because as alike in warrior-status as he is to Daddy, Dean really isn't doing this whole thing for revenge, as Daddy is - he's doing it to help people. As he repeats over and over in the freaking re-caps at the start of every episode, his life is "saving people; hunting things". His perspective is so much wider than John's, or even Sam's - both John and Sam are all about the Winchesters, and the Winchesters being alive and avenged. Things will change for John and Sam if/when the demon gets its comeupance, but for Dean it isn't even about that. Oh, DEAN. ♥
I am on fire with the meta today. Next on the spn:meta agenda: fandom meta on genderfuckery.

The spooky thing is that not only do Jensen and Jeffrey look similar, but I swear Jensen has the same smile as the Mary actress.
Here in a round out sort of way from
