Because I am a giant geek...
This is a reference post for Widdershins. It contains links to all the paranormal (and other) references used within the story. I'll say it contains spoilers for the story, only click if you've read it. Or if you don't enjoy unravelling a good mystery.
Widdershins
"Widdershins (sometimes withershins, or widershins) is a word which (usually) means anticlockwise, however in certain circumstances it can be used to refer to a direction which is against the light, i.e. where you are unable to see your shadow. It is cognate with the German language widersinnig, i.e., "against" + "sense". "
Bergson
Henri Bergson was a French Philosopher, author of "Time and Free Will" and "Matter and Memory", significant texts in the body of metaphysics and time philosophy. [Trivia: Bergson caused the world's first traffic jam, when giving a public lecture in Paris in the early 1900s.]
Etymology and history of first names: German names
- Eli, short for Elias or Elijah. Prophet.
- Hugo, Latinised form of Hugh, meaning "heart, mind or spirit".
- Philo, From the Greek name Φιλων (Philon), which was derived from φιλεω (phileo) "to love".
- Katharine, German spelling of Katherine. Debated etymological meanings include Greek‘εκατερος (Hekateros) "each of the two"; it could derive from the name of the goddess HECATE; it could be related to Greek αικια (aikia) "torture"; or it could be from a Coptic name meaning "my consecration of your name". The Romans associated it with Greek καθαρος (katharos) "pure".
- Other names: Eric, Abigail, Stephan, Judy, Susie, Anne, Maggie (totally didn’t even *think* of the Simpsons connection until after I posted it, I swear), Janey. I had a link for Schumann somewhere, but it was another site and I can’t find it.
First American woman walks in space
"October 11, 1984 - Aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan becomes the first American woman to perform a space walk."
Urban Legends: Ghostly Rescue
"The ghost of a woman killed in a car crash directs rescuers to the wreck to save her still-living baby, who is trapped within."
Doppelganger
According to ghosts.monstrous.com, "Doppelgangers are not merely 'evil twins', but ghostly doubles of living people [that] look very similar to the ghosts of the deceased. In some cases a person will come upon his own doppelganger who is typically engaged in some future activity." In other words, a doppelganger could be considered a spiritual 'remnant' of the future, as opposed to the past (as is with typical ghosts).
Moebius/Mobius Strip
The mobius strip has one continuous plane and two sides simultaneously. There is extensive theorisation on a mobius strip model of time theory. (eg: here, here.)
Ghosts
“A ghost is an alleged non-corporeal manifestation of a dead person (or, sometimes, an animal or a vehicle). It is often claimed to be a manifestation of the spirit or soul of a person which has remained on Earth after death.”
In SPN, ghosts are often depicted as malevolent and trouble-causing.

There's actually a local legend here that says if a pregnant woman hears a baby crying in the jungle at night she shouldn't go out. It supposed to be the taotaomona (Ancient Chamorro spirits/ancestor) trying to lure her out to steal her baby.

The baby crying wasn't in reference to a particular legend. Rather, it was meant to tie in with the whole doppelganger/moebius time mess that tangled around the Gundersons. There's a reference shortly after that instance in the story, I think, where the motel clerk recalls that she babysat for Katie, which places a Gunderson baby at the motel at some point in time *g*
That said, I was deliberately tapping into the whole baby crying = horror tradition as well :)
