I am only slightly less lame than my show.
I love the little subtle Sam characterisation stuff that comes through in the earlier episodes. Not as heavy-handed as shouting about how I Was Never Good Enough For Daddy and that kind of stuff, but the subtle acting stuff that really reverberates.
Specifically:
- Sam's interactions with Becky in Skin. Comparatively, they're pretty subtle. The whole "Little Becky" thing when he first sees her, then HIS LITTLE FACE when he says "I miss you guys too" during the hug at the end. They are pretty damn subtle things, that speak volumes about the fact that, yaknow, it's not like Sam was doing *nothing* before Dean came along. He had a life, friends, people who loved him, and he misses them. A lot.
- Sam's behaviour around the frat/frat party at the college in Hookman. Not only does he outright say to Dean that "This wasn't really my college experience" and yeah, he spent most of the time studying in the library; but on closer observation he's pretty nervous and uncomfortable around all the frat stuff. When they first go into the house, Sam's totally stepping on Dean's heels and looking somewhat alarmed, at the party he's not really any better. Whereas Dean's quite comfortable in both situations. Sam is a freaking introvert :)
- Also, it's something I never picked up on that strongly until after I'd seen Nightmare, but that progression of Sam keeping the secret of his premonitions from Dean, the way it plays out through Bloody Mary to Home to Nightmare... Sam being terrified of how Dean will react, not to the idea that Sam could have been the cause of Jess's death... but that Sam's a bit of a supernatural freak himself. That's played quite well, I think - subtly, powerfully. And like, John is all "something like this happens, you pick up the phone and call me!" - something that Dean doesn't really answer properly. After Nightmare he doesn't try and call John. That could be from John's blowoffs after Home and Faith, but I think it's just as likely Dean protecting Sam, because Sam's anxiety about becoming what they hunt is not entirely misplaced, I think.
Other things:
I can't believe I missed it before (must have been in the heat of the moment, yaknow), but in Home, after Dean's hauled Jenny out of the house, and Sam has carried the children down the stairs and knows that he has to stay to fight off the Big Bad, he says to them verbatim what John said to Dean: "Take your brother outside as fast as you can and don't look back. Go!" Which is not unexpected in Supernatural, fer frig's sake, it's not the most subtle of shows when it comes to things like that, but I am still cooing a little at it because Sam didn't even know until like, the day before, that Dean had carried him out of the house. There's no way he's going to know the exact words John spoke to Dean. It just makes me a little n'aww and happy and *x-files music*.

MOG YES. For all the skeazy creep that Dean can be/act like (The diner in Scarecrow anyone?) he is defintely more at home with people than Sam is.
Hookman was probably only the second or third party Sam's ever been to in his life, and I bet he doesn't mind the lack of parties. Me and
kidguy who liked a book and crappy TV over parties.I dare say he was the kind who went out of his way to not get invited, the one who always had "plans" whenever anyone hinted at "getting a couple fo friends together for beer" or anything like that.
For all of Sam's want for "normal" he's not a big people person, he just wants to be a Geeky Nerd in peace.
Also? I love that you are in this fandom and I love the way you think. [/stalker]

I mean, it's pretty obvious just in the costuming... what other kind of mindset hides *that* body with those kind of clothes? I mean, honestly. Dean covers up, but he still wears gear that's more flattering.
It just... it fits so well. Sam would never have fit in as a kid, never been all that confident around his peers (well, the ones that weren't like him, which would have been the majority), let alone stayed long enough to settle enough to relax anywhere.
And how much do I *love* that? (A: a lot.)
Yeah, it's a huge thing I enjoy about the show, it's what makes me love the characters so hard, that they're not the heroes, they're just ordinary people doing ordinary things. Sam's not this transcendent warrior, he's a kid with an introverted personality and a messed-up childhood. Who happens to know Latin, Sam-fu, can aim and shoot a gun and is not scared of GIANT HAIRY SPIDERS CRAWLING OVER HIS SKIN.
Which means that he spent so much time in the goddamn library because he was crap at interacting with other members of the human race, not because he was Super Smart Boy! (though yeah, he is pretty damn smart, too.)
I HEART GEEKY NERDS. Well, fictional ones. They tend to be hotter and more pleasant-smelling. And can shoot guns and hunt evil and stuff.

MOG! YES YES YES! Dude. Neither of them show much skin, forearms are porn in this show, but Dean's clothes are only loose on him. Sam's are downright baggy. I totally have a meta somewhere in my Supernatural folder on why Sam wears such baggy clothes and layers and such.
He doesn't want to be "normal" so much as he wants to be average. He wants to blend in with the crowd and have no one look twice at him ever. And with his height and his body? That means slouching and being quiet and wearing baggy clothes.
And how much do I *love* that? (A: a lot.)
Ditto. Massive amounts of love. MASSIVE.

Oh and that. That right there is why I love this show to tiny pieces. For serious, yo.

Dude. I never thought I'd say this but: You need to come to Phoenix. Our Geeky Nerds tend to have good aim and use that AXE deoderent stuff.

1) It's all very observant and very insightful, to the point that I'm going to accept it as truth.
2) It's not a thousand long like most other metas. Nor is it speculation (as is my wont *smacks self*).
3) The last one had the same x-filesy effect on me.
4) The one about Sam's nascent powers was totally true and when you explain it like that, it makes me adore the actors/writers/whoever even more for portraying it like that and makes me love this lame show even more.
Damn, man. Thank you very much!!!

Thanks :) I'm glad you're digging it.
I heart the show so!
