Mary asked me today, as I am apparently the sage of SPN, "are there any cliches in fandom that haven't been done?" and there was but one I could think of; all the rest had pretty quality examples. So lets see if we can fill in the gap(s). I'm not trying to list *all* the examples there are, just the ones I found particularly memorable (keeping in mind that a whole lot will be slashy/incesty, so look for warnings and ratings on the stories, yo):

My theory is that there's no weddingfic because of the whole "brothers! closer than liek, the olsen twins!" as an excuse to, you know, not make the union legal. also, incest. (disregarding the distinct lack of legislation allowing same-sex couples to marry in a lot of the countries people write fic for, but yaknow, fic.) And I know what you're thinking, but having their union blessed by a pagan god does NOT count; for it to be a cliche fic it totally has to have rings and ceremonies and suits and daddy walking them down the aisle and CRYING, DAMMIT, I WANT WINCHESTEARS and "like a virgin!" weddingnight uber-slash (with crying and passing out and) and, um, *cough* sorry, got a bit carried away there.

There's another amnesia fic that I can't for the life of me dig up, so if you can remember who wrote it/what it was called, PLEASE drop me a comment, Mary and I are tearing our hair out at the whole lethologica of it. It's that one where the 'lrignaf demon' (read: 'fangirl' in reverse) causes them both to lose their memories, and they're like "dude, we must be freaks, look at these guns!" and then "dude, you're hot, lets have sex!" and hijinks, naturally, ensue. eta: got it! thanks,

So if you can think of any fanfic cliches I've missed, or any stories you think desperately need to be in there, drop me a comment. I freaking love this stuff.

Also randomly today, because you totally wish you could be present for all conversations between Mary and I, in fact you wish we released a podcast, and this might just be the longest run-on-sentence ever, with far too many, commas, that are also unecessary but anyway: conversation heard in this very room this very day as mary and I were watching 'Wendigo':

me: there should be a totem animal cliche fic, Dean would totally have that alpha dog thing going on.
mary: *giving me a look that says "oh god, is this leading where I think this is leading?"* oh yeah?
me: yeah. he'd just pee all over Sam's stuff.
mary: *facepalm of "oh god, you totally did, you're obsessed with Dean peeing on everything of Sam's"* hahah, you should totally write it.
me: ...only fandom would never forgive me for Dean peeing on Jess's headstone.
mary: ...

This, of course, followed on from the very apt comment that in the first half of Wendigo, Dean is totally following Callum Keith Rennie around the forest and peeing on everything CKR pees on.

Mary and I also decided, I should mention, that Sam's totem animal would be a girl, in which case, he'd be just 'ew'ing and rolling his eyes about all the peeing, which he seems to do anyway. and telling Dean to roll over. ~~so he can scratch his belly while Dean's leg kick-kicks.~~

The stork is good, I admit. Dean would just constantly crack jokes about Sam bringing him bundles of joy, though, when he wasn't humping Sam's leg.

Sam's totem should be a girl-stork, a longlegged lofty thing with a long long beak that reaches into ~~people's heads~~ and the like.

He could nudge Dean's balls with it and scratch his dawg belly... and it would open wide when he cackles with glee.

Coincidentally enough, she also wrote a terrific totem fic (http://lyra-wing.livejournal.com/18329.html) based off of Pullman's "His Dark Materials". And it just so happens that she polled her flist to get ideas for their totems, and we all concluded that Dean's soul is a wolf and Sam's is a hawk. So everyone's clearly on the same wavelength here.

Oh hell yes! or, well, they are cliches because they've been done a million times, again and again in each fandom, but with the negativity stripped from that term. I love them, they're done awesomely well.

And I was just grabbing for the extreme tropes that are easily categorized. What's on your list?

oh gosh. off the top of my head?

jealousy makes one guy crack
is first time, period, a cliche? or an archetypal experience? hee.
virginity is given up; kind of overlaps with the age change one of yours.
bathing/showering
someone tries something kinky for the other partner and ends up loving it more
was stranded on your list? I think it was...
many, many variations on injury leads to touching leads to omg attraction; h/c is a whole genre, is it not?
wng -- 90 percent of the lotrips i wrote involved this.
disguise, including chat room nicknames, brings them together
accident or cataclysm makes one partner declare love; these fic can actually have a plot!
i'm sure i'll think of more in the middle of the night.....

it's fun to think of fandom specific triggers to sex/romance; like in The Sentinel the fanon developed idea of the Sentinel/Guide bond or even Bond or sometimes even BOND.

I think Dean peeing on Sam's friends is CANON in re: Skin and Rebecca.

'aliens made us do it' is a general catch-all for the "it wasn't me! we had to!" trope (so, your succubi category would fit under that heading, for example). 'Alien' under the general definition - i.e. 'not us'.

I want to know where the 'Dean is going to get beat up by like, six dudes and a crowbar for hitting on someone's sister until Sam rescues him by pretending to be his annoyed boyfriend' stories are.

Dean leaving for Sam's own good. Man, he does that a LOT in the fics I read. However, there's one by anne hutchinson or somebody which is my absolute fav for that. And then, eshrol.... something. She did one, too - in fact, it's a series - and they're both WUNNERFUL. I can linkie, if you want 'em.

I was thinking more in terms of generic, cross-fandom cliches, but yeah, that one does pop up a lot in SPN, dunnit?
