I have been working with [livejournal.com profile] curriejean on setting up [livejournal.com profile] tw_kinkandseek, a community for collecting and collating Torchwood fic by KINK.

The way it works is that you claim a kink you like, then go out and hunt down all the stories with it you can find, perhaps pulling out a few to rec as your favourites.

Then you post to the community in the timeslot you also claimed (so hopefully, it'll keep trundling on for a while instead of fizzling), the post gets tagged and each story you link to gets bookmarked in the kinkandseek delicious account, too.

Find out more about what it's all about, or just go ahead and claim a kink now :D

I want this to work! It'll be super-cool! Come and play!

In other news, Transformative Works and Cultures [journal] have just released their Supernatural issue! Even not being in the fandom any more, I've had a poke around and enjoyed a bunch of the articles now. It's super-solid. And you also get to read this awesome interview with me & my fellow Supernatural Wiki admins.

It was funny doing that, because Deb totally came to it like, "so, tell me about how you handle the CONFLICT of managing a wiki!" and we were like, "conflict? what conflict? this is UTOPIA!" ♥Super-wiki

Torchwood Fixit Collection on the AO3

I've created a Collection for Torchwood fixits on the Archive of Our Own.

And by "fixit" in this case, I mean stories wherein killed-off Torchwood characters aren't so dead after all.

Here's the blurb for the Collection:
Whether you want to save Ianto Jones, re-write the fates of Owen and Toshiko, redeem Rupesh or go back as far as rescuing Lisa, this collection covers it all.

The definition of a "fixit" is relatively broad; you don't have to 'fix' a canonical character death by reversing it, you can write a alternate universe where it never happened.

Generally, however, fixits continue on with other canonical details, rather than branching into alternate storylines entirely (for example; Tosh and Owen live to see the events of CoE, Suzie lives to see the events of season 2, and so on). The exception is, of course, when fixits are written with no new canon to go on (e.g. bringing back Ianto), and it's perfectly acceptable to go off on your own conjecture.

Basically, if you're unhappy with the killing off of characters in Torchwood, and have created a universe where it isn't so, share it here.

(Re: that second-last para - is that how other people see these kinds of fixits too?)

Now, I am tempted to leave this a few days before posting to [livejournal.com profile] ao3_collections, as at present, I am the only one there who's promo'd a collection so far *g*

But, Torchwood fen on the AO3 who have written this sort of story, please add!

Adventures in archiving

I have ongoing soap operas of story archiving. I archive stories on my site because there are more readers than commenters always, so I like to see the stats of how many hits it gets and where they're linked from. And I post stories on LJ because stories actually archived on LJ are more likely to have readers comment on them. And then I archive stories on the AOOO because it'll be there forever.

And so right now I try to archive in all three places. Well, I'm gradually moving stories from [livejournal.com profile] hopeful_fiction to the AOOO, and am thinking of moving fics posted on LJ to the website solely. Well, not solely; after I put them on my website I use the vacuum importer to put them on the Archive as well.

BUT. I post all kinds of scribbles and timestamps and ficlets on my LJ that I don't particularly want to archive on my website - the website is for completed, polished stories.

BUT I don't want to lose all those scribbles and ficlets either, so the Archive seems the best place to collect all of this in some sense-making way. A set of scribbles for the same theme or set of prompts; or collecting together all the material from the same 'verse - timestamps, outtakes, etc.

But I'm not sure how to collate these on my Archive account - for the outtakes and things, these aren't complete stories (most of the time) that I want to list as separate stories. For example: Not with a bang or a whimper - a single story, with an outtake, and a timestamp. The outtake and timestamp I don't consider stand-alone stories on their own, even amidst a series.

So I don't want to create a "Not with a bang or a whimper" series, because I'm not certain I want each of those fragments of that 'verse given story status. At the moment, as you can see, I've posted them as chapters subsequent to the actual story, but that doesn't quite work either. In part because they're not chapters at all, therefore the "Chapter X" title at the top of each just doesn't work. In part because the way it always displays either as one long, linear piece (chapter 1 then chapter 2 then chapter 3 displayed down the page) or as a serial - read chapter 1 first then click the "next chapter" button.

Basically, the chaptering option is ideal for stories that are actually multi-parted.

And the series option is ideal for collections of stories.

But I'm still unsure of which one, if either, I want to use to collate these bits of material that belong to a 'verse.

*thinks*

I suppose practically speaking, what I want is something that lists as one story (perhaps with a mark to indicate 'additional material'?) on my list of works, but when I click on it displays more like a series, with a linked list of what material is contained there.

So, do I wrangle the existing options at the AOOO to get what I want? Or poke to request more flexibility in the chaptering options? like - a "list titles/links of all chapters" page? (totally makes sense!) The ability to classify something as "chaptered/multi-part" or "verse"? The ability to remove the "Chapter X" added to each part's title?

Or to request a way to collapse the 'series' thing into a 'verse' thing?

PONDERATION.

Whee!

People are writing (and posting) stories for my [livejournal.com profile] hard4brains July 4 ficathon! This fills me with glee and makes me do a little dance on the inside. On the outside I just make high-pitched noises and clap my hands a lot.

I am collecting them all under a tag on delicious - july4ficathon - if you want to access/watch/subscribe to a master list or tag your own stories as you write them :D

I should really get on to writing my own story for the ficathon, now. Well, I hope to write *more* than one, but at least one will be a big achievement in itself!

Okay, re: my wanting to run a Die Hard 4.0 July 4 ficathon idea, I've posted about it to [livejournal.com profile] hard4brains. If you think you might want to participate, then go there and fill out my poll!

So it doesn't flop entirely (though this is no guarantee, heh), I'll run if it the responses to the poll reach a certain number (which is, considering the number of people watching the community, quite low).

woot woot. fiiiiiic!
