I can't think of a better note to end on than this, really. Cathy's made a beautiful vid that talks about one of the most recapitulated (but rarely extrapolated) tropes of the fandom: Jack's immortality. It's gorgeous and I love it, and watched it several billion times as I was writing yesterday's story.

12 Days of Cliche
cupidsbow posted an absolutely fantastic vid. It's short and sharp, a constructed reality vid about Jack in 1941, set to a 'Sing, Sing, Sing' and using archival footage as well as Who and Torchwood visuals, of course.
It is AWESOME, and so clever and glee-making, and I'm totally blown away by the fact that Cathy made this in the horrible Windows Movie Maker. VID MASTER, I TELLS YOU.
Go and watch it. It's super-shiny.

I am willing to stand up and be scorned (and secretly - or not so secretly - agreed with): I freaking love this premise in this fandom. There are some brilliantly clever, hilarious and moving stories based around these cliches, and Cathy has recced pretty much all of my favourites.
So, go and check them out!

12 DAYS OF CLICHE.
And then I thought that 12 fics would be over-extending myself a bit, especially after a dry spell, so I roped
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So over the next 12 days, between December 26 and January 6,
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I say "related to the theme" because though I started with "O RITE I'LL WRITE CLICHE STORIES", looking at what I've got, I can't say that's strictly the case. At least, not as I would have previously considered it. But what sticking with that cliche theme has done has made me think about what cliche means and is for, not just for readers/connoisseurs of culture, but for creators as well. The term "cliche" itself is about an awareness of storytelling, so when you're the writer/artist/vidder, cliche is about reflexivity. It's about painting with tropes and not just thinking about what the characters might think, but how to speak to the readers in the language of storytelling.
So anyway. The set we've ended up with is not only about those writ-big cliches that we all know and love (or roll our eyes at), but also about the particular cliches that writers and readers in this fandom of these characters might find familiar, and overall, about the art and process (and joy) of storytelling: what we've done, what RTD's done, what you've done.
Plus, we are having FUN. Even if I do freak out over the next 12 days because I haven't got everything done yet.
Posting will start tomorrow, here and at

I know that a lot of people that have left requests already are waiting until after the closing date before claiming which ones they will write for, so don't be discouraged if you're scrolling through. Prompt claiming closes on December 31! And then posting is open til the 10th of January.
COME AND PLAY.
In other news, I think that when people write about alien or futuristic sex toys coming through the rift, they should be writing about these. (Jack comes from a time/culture of high-tech steampunk revival, y/y?)

Creep (vid) by
cupidsbow
In which Ianto is a creep and a weirdo, but that's okay because Jack is too, and that's why they're MFEO.
Reclamation (fic/art/site/multi) by
amand_r
Conceptualised, written and produced by amand_r, assisted by many. The epistolary fic to trump all epistolary fics. This is part of UNITs database of artefacts, scans of and notes on the contents of a metal fire proof box found in the ruins of the Hub... Made of awesome.
Ianto and Jack Dress-up Game (fanart/game) by =Kinky-chichi
Know those flash games where you pick clothes for the virtual paper doll? Well, now you can dress up Jack and Ianto in a variety of saucy combinations. So adorable and tonnes of fun.
We held gold dust in our hands (fic) by
amand_r
A what-if-things-had-gone-differently-at-Canary-Wharf AU, in which everyone lives and everyone shags. 63,000 words of love and porn fucked-up-ness and happiness.
John Barrowman (x 3) does the Single Ladies dance by creativenuts
Judging by the other stuff made by this YouTuber, I think this is quite probably a manipped video, but it's hilarious regardless. Especially the riverdance bit.

miserable fuck tradition, but I did make an icon:

It's for
mistletw, because Cathy decided that the Torchwood fandom needed a festive fic exchange and frankly, I agree with her!
Here's how it works:
1. You comment on the master post with your request (aka prompt!), using the handy format provided
2. You browse the other requests made and claim one by replying to the request in question (anonymously, if you wish for it to be a surprise!)
3. You post your story/art/vid to the community between January 1-10, and gleefully receive yours in the same manner!
I love writing for these things but always take ages to come up with a request for something I WANT.
So anyway, everyone into TW who's reading this should go and sign up for it. GO. DO IT.

Then of course there's the tropical holiday one, which I've not made ANY progress on whatsoever; the psychic paper wooing one which I still reeeally want to write, with the same deal; the timestamp for the circus AU; the Ianto/Owen/Tosh co-written porn which is happily taking the long road; the orgy-tastic continuation of the space opera universe; and about a million other ideas I'd love to write but have never put words down for.
Hopefully when I get back home I'll be in a headspace where I can properly relax and be inspired to write again.
