... and it just struck me that several years out of the LOTR fandom, people might not be familiar with that term. Basically, Hobbits have a custom where instead of receiving presents on their birthday, they give presents. These presents-given-from-the-birthday-hobbit are called "mathoms". Every year I try and scrape together some fandom mathoms for my birthday - fics, icons, etc. (might even try vids this time!), with varying success.
So, will attempt some mathoms this year. It's quite a strong possibility (if not a guarantee) that they will be Firefly-centric this year, but as you might know, I'm rather fond of crossovers too.
If you have any requests or suggestions, now's the time, though I'm not making any promises - I will write things if the inspiration hits, which you may be able to aid me with :)

THEIR LITTLE SNUB TAM NOSES!
Okay Mizzle. READY STEADY GO.
Seeing as it took me longer than I'd like to admit to (relatively) seamlessly tweak these three images together, I'll post it here:
But anyway, what I'm posting about: Serenity's second weekend. I don't want to let it fall behind. If you saw it on the first weekend, see it again this weekend. If you haven't seen it at all yet, what in tarnation are you waiting for? Go see it this weekend.
And if you can't make it to the theatre? Well, I've had a busy freaking week and I don't know if I'm up for another visit to the theatre in the next few days. But I'm not going to let that stop me, and as much as people might roll their eyes when I say this, I don't care - imma go ahead and buy myself a bunch of tickets anyway, even if I'm not going to fill up the seats in person.
So if you can afford the tickets but not the time, I encourage those with the inclination to do the same, and support Serenity with your wallet (or in my case, my credit card, hah) even if you can't make it to a theatre (if you have other responsibilities, or it's not showing in your town, or whatever).
And I hope she doesn't mind, but the prompt for this blatantly stolen from

And, in Australian-specific Firefly news, JB HiFi is giving out free double passes to Serenity if you buy the Firefly complete series DVD from them, which they are currently selling at a reduced price - $38. It's worth it :D
Anyway, that made me a bit grumpy, but I didn’t feel too bad, because it’s not like everyone else doesn’t think Jim Schembri is an ass without a pinch of taste.
But, speaking of reviews,
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
I walked into this movie reasonably aware of the advance word-of-mouth (though not obsessively so) and only as the film actually began this afternoon, the day of its premier, did it occur to me that I had not heard a whisper of a breath of the actual plot of the movie. All I heard was, "It's great, you'll love it."
Well, guess what.
It's great.
I'm not going to say it's the best science fiction movie, ever.
Oh, wait. Yes I am.
But, everyone should read this review, if you have a modicum of interest or uncertainty in seeing Serenity. And I’m not just saying that because I’m rabid. It really is worth it. He talks more about the genre of science fiction, and literature, and humanity, than rambling about points in the movie itself. But don’t let that put you off - it is quite short, very succint and accessible. READ IT!
All just folk now.

Serenity imdb.com listing.
According to sources at the signal, imdb.com is considered an important tool in the industry for gauging the success of a film. By just typing “Serenity” into imdb and doing a search for the movie (and of course, clicking on the link to it that comes up), you are literally registering your interest in the show. Attention is paid to that.
More attention, though, is paid to the rating system used by imdb. Know that line of stars with the X.X/10 figures next to it? That’s an indicator of how imdb users have rated the film whose entry you’re looking at. Attention is paid to the rating system. But the rating system doesn’t work simply - your vote is weighted depending on how many *other* movies you rate at imdb. For example, if you just sign up and rate Serenity and no other films, your vote might count as 1. If you sign up, vote on 100 other films, you vote might count as 5. 500 films, it might count as 20. You get the picture. So sign up at imdb. Vote an assload of other movies you’ve seen. Then give Serenity a 10. Also on imdb, talk up the movie on the message boards (I know, I feel like they give me cooties too). Submit a positive review/comment.
Showing your support on other movie websites
Movielens is a great movie database site which allows you to rate all the movies you’ve ever seen. It then, based on your tastes and how you’ve rated other films, offers you suggestions. It also has a message board for discussion on movies. Sign up to movielens (it is a university experiment based site, so it is very clean and helpful, no ads or spam or nothing), give Serenity 5 stars, talk it up on the boards.
RottenTomatoes.com is another movie review site (more well known) which allows users to vote on movies they’ve seen. It then calculates an average rating on the film, based on both critics and user ratings. If the rating is above 60%, they consider it a good/successful film. Serenity is currently at 80% there. Sign up, keep voting!
Spreading the signal via word of mouth is always the way to go. If you’re on a message board, in a chat room, or on a train, at work, school, whatever - it most definitely doesn’t have to be a fandom setting - and the opportunity arises: talk Serenity up. Encourage people to see it. It ain’t that hard, it could only take as long as it takes to refresh your friends page and scroll on by all those posts again.
Just think about it for a bit.
This is from the section on River, a quote from Summer Glau where she talks about the performances in Serenity from Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin & Sean Maher.

eta: Shiny Shirts are now selling buttons! awesome :D
Child of a weatlhy and cultured family, Simon was a successful surgeon on a Central Planet until he discovered that his little sister River was in trouble. He spent years planning her rescue, then fled with her to the outer plantes and took passage on Serenity. A city slicker on the wild frontier, he’s often lost and out of place in the rough places Serenity lands. His exquisite manners seem pretentious or laughable to most on the outer planets, and his self-defense skills are almost non-existent.
The one place where his courage never fails is protecting his sister. His attraction to Kaylee is severly hampered by his shyness and his knack of always saying the wrong thing to her. If he ever had to choose between River and Kaylee, that would be a very, very bad day for all of them.
Job on Serenity: Doctor
Loves: River, Kaylee
Hates: The life of a refugee; the people who tried to hurt River
My emphasis: er, yeah. because River would spend the day being all “I TOLD YOU SO” and Kaylee would spend the day biting everyone else’s head off and making sure their entry coupling (so to speak) was a rather jerky one, while Simon hid in the infirmary “doing doctor things to get River better”.
Also, god, I love that last bit with the loves/hates. SNORT. I think
