Yesterday I stole Karen and made her watch the first two Die Hard films with me. I totally love #4 even more, now.

I love action films. Mainly, I love seeing them at the cinema. I had never seen a Die Hard film before I went to see #4 at the theatre about a month ago, and I'm surprised by how much I heart its cheesy goodness.

It was weird and awesome to see how WEE McClane was in the first one, and how his character has changed by the 4th. One of the things I enjoyed most about the 4th one was the MAD MACGUYVER SKILLZ OF IMPROVISATION! It's something I love in action films as much as the fact that fight scenes are choreographed these days; the creative staging of action sequences. It's one of the things I love most about the Bourne films - that uber-skilled action hero who can fashion a killing machine out of a burnt match and a bag of sugar.

Anyway, my point is, I love #4 even more now after seeing how innocent and unskilled McClane is in the first two films. He's just winging it, constantly with the monologue of "this sucks, why me!?" By the fourth he's totally beat down and jaded. He's learnt it all the hard way. Bourne was trained to be slick and badass, McClane had to learn it on the fly and at great price, and he certainly isn't slick, but I love that he doesn't complain any more, just sucks it up and deals (with a kind of bitter enjoyment).

Which brings me to:

[Poll #1053382]

As if there is any QUESTION!

ETA: *chants* JOHN! JOHN! JOHN!

I need to get hold of Die Hard 3, now.

werewolves in progress

hope: Art of a woman writing from tour poster (wolves)
Lo and behold, I've actually started putting words into my 'new' werewolf 'verse story again. By its very nature, it's all over the place, but I'm trying to make myself relax and take advantage of it - allow myself to jump all over the place in the writing stages instead of grinding to a halt as I attempt to push at one particular bit that won't budge.

At any rate, a small handful of people expressed excitement at the prospect of a new story in this 'verse, so I thought I'd do that WIP meme thing again - where I post snippets of in-progress stories. And, well, this is the only one really in progress at the moment. All of the others have not been worked on since forever, or have no more than a line or two, or are no more than twinkles in my eye at this stage.

Anyway. Here's a whole section for ya: Read more... )

I feel a bit weird about this story, now. It's become fanfiction of my fanfiction. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it departs very much from the canon we know and into my own head, which makes me a bit anxious (i.e. why would people want to read that??)

But we'll see how it goes. I've been thinking of these things for a long time, so it will be good to try and express them (ain't art grand?).

And, for your convenience, I've just tagged previous wip meme postings, if you're new and interested in reading snippets of the long-languishing John/Dean bodyswap, or a passage of Sam mauling his professor at Stanford, or selected parts of stories that have long since been posted.

Fannish wish list

These are not things I want from other people, they are things that I want to do myself. I keep on getting fabulous ideas, but motivation and inspiration is at a low point. So I will just air my wishful thinking.

I would like to... )

Oooh bummer. I just discovered JB HiFi (Australian discount DVD store) have an online store. With cheap DVDs. And cheap shipping within Australia (and cheap intl shipping too, I must say). And a really cool interface that allows you to have a wishlist etc too.

And, um, I might just have purchased Seasons 1 & 2 of Carnivale, and Season 5 of Six Feet Under. I would have got Deadwood S3 as well, but it's still a bit pricey for me (even on special). ALSO I JUST SPENT $120 ON DVDS I NEED TO HIDE THE CREDIT CARD, NOW. O_O

Below the cut is commentary for my Supernatural pre-series gen story, little rattle stilt, at the request of several people.

My commentary is in red.

Okay, so that wasn’t so bad. Boy, I am wordy.

Next up I think I'll do Field of Mars, and then attempt to tackle the behemoth of Widdershins.

Then someone has requested I do one of my John/Dean stories OR Socktacular, so I'll have to see what I'm up for at that point *g*

If there's one in particular you want, drop your request in here.

VERONICA MARS, DAMMIT. TAKING OVER MY SLEEPING SCHEDULE. I watched one disc of S2 last night, and just finished another disc now, and, um. Might just have put in the third disc. Dammit!

I know I was avoiding specific spoilers for the seasons I hadn't seen myself, so I'll use a cut tag for when I ramble about VM S2 and, naturally, how it relates to Supernatural. )

Um. I can't even type properly, which is an indication that I'm tired, and yet, there seems to be another disc of VM in my DVD drive...

Aww. I don't have my Veronica/Logan icon any more. This one will have to do, given the nature of the above 1am ramblings.

From Peter Johnson:
As you may know from previous posts, I felt early on that there would be creative and character-driven value to seeing John get the Impala during his journey in the aftermath of Mary's death. It was a decision, and Kripke and I talked about it. However, I'm in violent agreement with many of your comments that the car is the third character in the show, and that it represents a sanctuary for this family following the death of Mary. I like it as the constant that remains after her death - as Mousitsa (Anna) puts it: 'baby' was there to support her three men after the fire.

These comments have made profound impact, and I agree wholeheartedly with the thematics they represent for the SN universe - for both TV and comics. So, despite the fact that #1 and #2 have both been published, I am going to propose making adjustments to revert to John already having the Impala from the get-go when the issues are collected into the trade paperback. I would like to restore this notion to the comics. I believe in my heart and gut that it would be the correct version, not just to match the shot of John and the boys of the hood of the Impala in the pilot teaser, but much more importantly, for what the car represents in the continuity of the family -- before and after Mary's death. I'll be talking to DC about this on Monday.

*fistpump*

You know, I don't just love my fandom. I love the pros who are creating the canon, too.

ETA: further down in that comment thread he also says he'll be advocating to DC a complete removal of references to Jo in #3, which I support WHOLEHEARTEDLY.

I am extremely fond of Jo, but a great deal of that fondness comes from the fact that she is young (younger than Sam), a rookie, a brassy kid fighting with her parent and wanting to dive in and get to it, clunky and amateur in so many aspects of her life. I LOVE it. That just doesn't work for me if she's Dean's age.

DOUBLE HOORAY!

Supernatural Pre-series Zine

hope: Art of a woman writing from tour poster (origins #1 sam and dean)
Remember [livejournal.com profile] preseries_zine? If not, well, it was me starting to put together a Supernatural preseries zine. Originally my deadline for stories was the end of June, but as I went overseas, the project languished. However! I'm firing it up again, with a new deadline at the end of August.

The guideline for submissions is still this-a-way, and I'm still keen on the chronological idea, so if you think you'd like to write a piece for it, please indicate to me what era you think you'd write in. If you're thinking of it at all, really, please drop me a note so I can keep up to speed with whether I need to be headhunting more strenuously :D

BAH. Why do I have to read an entire 30,000 word fic (with adequate warnings) before coming to the conclusion that deathfic just doesn't agree with me?

Just. It's not like a squick, or something that does nothing for me, more that it does too much for me. And you know, I'm not even going to read 30,000 words unless they're good from the beginning, which makes it even WORSE.

It just STICKS with me in a really angstful way. I just CAN'T STOP THINKING about Brer Left-behind, and how fucking AWFUL and INCOMPREHENSIBLE that is.

Grnah! Feh! Their stupid little orphan HEADS. NNG. *waves fists around and weeps* /Arnie Grape

PS. because this is as good a place as any to dump it, mysteries of love - antony & the johnsons. WARNING: do not listen to this song while reading deathfic, it will make you weepy whenever it comes onto your earphones afterwards, at the most INOPPORTUNE times.
